THE WADSWORTH GAS ATTACK a n d RIO GRANDE RATTLER 25 WORLD BREVITIES NEWS IN CAPSULE FORM. Edited By JY S„ Kingsley. The w ar situation in Europe has not m a terially changed since our last issue. The B ritish still hold the heights gained around Cambrai. L a st week it was thought th a t the fighting in th a t section had ceased and an attack near Ypres was expected. On the contrary the German forces have made a t tack after attack at Cambrai in th e ir at tem p ts to dislodge the B ritish. The Ger m ans have sacrificed great num b ers of their men in this attem p t, evidently because she realizes th a t Cambrai heights hold the key to a large sector which, in turn, protects the Belgian coast w here German subm a rines are, probably, stationed. Even a casual lay observer can easily see the im p o rtance of the B ritish gains. The Germans have kept up their attacks along the Italian frontier w ithout success. The Allies have rushed aid to Italy, which was sorely needed. The defense of the plain around Venice has been the chief purpose of the Italians. The Germans have been ham m ering w ithin th ir ty miles of Venice, th a t unique and wonderful city, ju s t the sort of a treasury of a r t and of history th a t the Hun would like to destroy. The Teuton is trying to get Venice but for three weeks has been foiled. W hile the faster boats are seldom vic tim s of the U-boat yet the subm a rine has been busy sinking about three boats a day. As yet the Allies can not produce ships as rapidly as they are being sunk but ships practicably unsinkable are being produced. All the Allies have agreed upon one m an agem ent of all shipping in order to produce the most efficient results. The R u ssian ultra-socialists have made an arm istice w ith Germany and are nego tiatin g for peace. Yet the R u ssian situation has not cleared. Unless R u ssia is an ex ception to all history there will be a severe counter revolution soon due there. As a whole this has been an Allies’ week. Al though Germany has been even reckless in her assaults she has made no gain to com pensate her for the losses. The Americans participated in two bril lian t episodes during the past week. Sev eral engineers who, having been surrounded, were taken prisoners fell in w ith some B r it ish who rescued them. A n o ther party of Americans in a motor car was cut off by a German m achine gun set in the road. The Americans at full speed ran past the Teutons. Our governm ent has declared w a r against A u stria-H u n g a ry. This became necessary in order to furnish Italy supplies and other aid.
