Heather MacDougal and Maria Slattery each scored three times, as Moriah advanced to | Saturday's championship match with a 6-2 win over defending : Class D champion Chazy Wed- • nesday at Peru. Westport, a 3-0 winner over • Lake Placid in Wednesday's other Class D semifinal, is | Moriah's title-match opponent. The Vikings (7-9-3) built a quick 4-0 lead Wednesday, en •' rbute to their second-largest [ margin of victory of the season. \I think we caught them off- guard with our speed,\ Moriah . coach Jim Wade said. \Our defense did well to control the game and took Chazy out of their game.\ For Chazy (9-5-2), Carey Goyette and Jamie Wilson scored goals, with Sarah West assisting on both of them. Westport (14-3-2) got goals from Korinna Conley, Frances Holzhauer and Katie Johnston to end the Blue Bombers' season. Conley's tally came first, off a through pass from Johnston just 5:10 into the match. \It seemed to get us going,\ Westport coach Brad Rascoe said. \If there's a team that has played a passing game against us as well as we do, Lake Placid is the team.\ But Westport's defense never allowed Lake Placid's passing game to get completely rolling. The Bombers (6-7-1) did fire nine shots upon Westport goalie Wen- dy Tromblee, but Tromblee stop- ped ail of them. Holzhauer's goal came off a redirection of Alison Beal's cross, and Johnston capped the scoring with 13:58 left in the match. MoHah «, Chuy 2 Morl«h 4 2 - « Chazy 11-2 First half- 1, M, H. Sectional soccer capsules BOYS Section VII Class C Championship Saranac (12-5-3) vs. Northern Adirondack (14-4-1) , At Seton Catholic, 7 p.m. * Saranac: In Tuesday's semifinal win against Northeastern Clinton, the Chiefs seemed reminiscent of the Saranac team which opened the CVAC season as a championship threat. Team captain Bobby Brault had to sit out Tuesday's game because he received two yellow cards in Saranac's previous match, but he'll be back for today. And Scott Petrashune, one of Saranac's top playmakers, also is back in the lineup after missing three weeks with a hamstring injury. Coach Jim Gratto's comments: \We have to come out and play with some in- tensity and play hard in the midfield. This was our ultimate goal.\ Northern Adirondack: Northern Adirondack's offense can score against any- body, but the key to a victory today will likely be the play of the Bobcats' defense — outside fullbacks Adam Shutts, Peter McComb and Clarence LaBarge, sweeper Cory Conners and stopper Tom Mathews. Northern Adirondack plays a different style of soccer than Saranac does, and is faced with the daunting task of controll- ing tempo. Coach Don Moulton's comments: \We have to try to play our game, do what we do best and try to withstand their pressure.\ 1995 Postseason Road: In semifinal play, Northern Adirondack beat Saranac Lake, while Saranac downed Northeastern Clinton. Season series: Saranac won the first meeting 3-2; Northern Adirondack won the teams' CVAC finale, 5-1. Section X Class B Championship Franklin Academy (11-4-4) vs. Ogdensburg (10-4-1) At St. Lawrence University, 1:30 p.m. Franklin Academy:- The Huskies seem to be peaking at exactly the right time. Franklin Academy beat Massena 2-1 in the semifinal round of the Section X Tour- nament, despite being outshot 29-19. Goaltender Jeremy Roberts has been strong all season for Franklin Academy, and he'll have to come up big today. . Ogdensburg: Coach Tom Bruyere's club is led by goalkeeper Greg McClear, a Section X first-teanv selection. The Blue Devils don't have a lot of offensive weaponry (Ogdensburg's leading scorer7~Marc Charlton, has 10 goals), but Mc- Clear keeps them in practically every game. 1995 Postseason Road: In semifinal play, Franklin Academy beat Massena, while Ogdensburg beat Gouverneur. Season Series: Ogdensburg won the first meeting 3-2 in overtime; the teams played to a 2-2 draw in the second meeting. GIRLS Class C Championship Saranac (13-4-3) vs. Northeastern Clinton (18-0-1) At Seton Catholic, 5 p.m. Saranac: How good are the Chiefs in pressure situations? Consider this: Saranac's girls athletic teams have won the last eight Section VII crowns and trek to Seton today gunning for No. 9. The two-time defending Class C soccer champi- ons have a tall order today, but emotion can take teams a long way. Only one ,..'| other team, Plattsburgh High, scored more goals against the Cougars in CVAC play this season than Saranac. Coach Mary LoTemplio's comments: \For us, the key is going to be playing a complete 80-minute game of 100 percent intensity and winning the ball. We can't have a letdown.\ * Northeastern Clinton: Winners of six of the last 11 meetings between the two rivals, Northeastern Clinton comefs to\ the\ championship match with the area's longest unbeaten streak, 18 matches. The Cougars' last loss came at Saranac's hands in last year's Section VII Class C final. A win tonight would be the Cougars' best revenge. Coach Josie Gilroy's comments: \We're going to give it our best shot. Both teams are going to go at it hard.\ 1995 Postseason Road: Saranac beat Northern Adirondack in the quarterfinals and beat Tupper Lake in the semifinals; Northeastern Clinton beat Ticonderoga in the semifinal round. Season Series: NCCS swept, winning 4-2 at home and 2-1 in Morrisonville. — Capsules by Tim Reynolds Clinton opens up strong PAUL SMITHS - Clinton Community College's men's basketball team outscored Paul Smith's 24-4 over the final 7:02 Wednesday night, as the Cougars pulled away for a season-opening 91-71 victory over the Bobcats in men'k junior college basketball. \Clinton's got a very nice team,\ Paul Smith's coach Mark Cartmill said. \(Clinton coach) Eric (Arnold) has done a real nice job with them.\ Rodney Seale led Clinton (1-0) •with 26 points and 18 rebounds. Ed Johnson had 19, Tim Lacount 14, Stephen Fuller 13 and Tyrond Spencer 11 for Clinton, which outscored its hosts 28-7 from the foul line. Faul Smith's (0-1) was plagued by both poor, ballhandling and poor shooting. The Bobcats hit just 7 of 17 free throw attempts and buried just 22.2 percent of their 3-point shots, missing 14 of 18 bombs. In addition, Paul Smith's tufned the ball over 29 times against a swarming Clhi- : ton defense. \It wa^ a close game, really,\ Carfemill said. \The score isn't in- dicative of that.\ . Ernest Bethurie led the Bob- cats with 11 points and seven re- bounds. Matt Attanasio (seven assists) and Hasan Monroe each hit for 10 points.
