WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 22,1995 SPORTS PRESS-REPUBLICAN PAGE 17 Winter sports season off to slow start as Saranac Lake enjoys spectacular fall By TIM REYNOLDS Staff Writer File Photo Ryan Ratelle will be one of several Saranac Lake athletes making quick transition from fall to winter sports after this weekend. SARANAC LAKE - As Saranac Lake's athletic director, Mark Gilligan could not be prouder of the Redskins' fall sports program. As Saranac Lake's ice hockey coach, Gilligan's ready for the fall to end. Gilligan and new boys varsity basket- ball coach Dick Zerrahn have run into a not-so-unpleasant problem, since many stalwarts of their respective teams are still playing football for the Redskins, who play LeRoy Sunday for the state Class C football championship at the Carrier Dome. \It's been pretty difficult practicing,\ Gilligan said. \We had practice (Tues- day) with one senior, no juniors and the other 14 players were either 10th, ninth or eighth graders.\ The hockey team is missing forwards Ryan Ratelle (Section VII's leading scorer in 1994-95, 41-23-64), Peter Schmidt and Seth Shatraw, as well as defensemen Josh Dann and Dustin Plumadore. Three potential starters — Neil For- tier, Glenn Stearns and Jarred Amell — are absent from most basketball prac- tices, as is sophomore Doug Cochran. \You'd always love to have them here,\ Zerrahn said. \But winning a state championship, only one C school can do it — and let's go for it. Winning breeds winning.\ Gilligan's hockey team posted a 16- 11-0 overall record last season, and returns many intregal parts this winter. Problem is, it's not officially winter yet. \We've got six games in the first nine days of the season, which opens Nov. 30,\ Gilligan said. \After our tourna- ment, after the ninth of December, we should have a pretty good idea what to expect.\ Revised New York State Public High School Athletic Association policies allow three practices to be awarded to carryover athletes, meaning players who have one season overlap into the next. The five hockey players have already skated twice, and will skate again Mon- day, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, meaning they'll- all be eligible for next Thursday's season-opener — since the three alloted practices will give them the necessary eight workouts. \I didn't want to do conditioning, anyway,\ Ratelle said half-jokingly. \It doesn't matter to me.\ Zerrahn has a bit more time to prepare than Gilligan does, as the basketball team (6-10 league, 8-12 overall last year) doesn't open its league slate until Dec. 8 against AuSable Valley. \They've snuck in the gym a little bit already. They'll be in basketball shape by (Dec. 8),\ Zerrahn said, \Some of the timing might not be there, but they'll be ready to go.\ As awkward as some practices have been, Zerrahn and Gilligan still wouldn't have it any other way. \It's been a lot. of work, with both cross-country teams going to states and the boys going to Federations, and foot- ball doing as well as they've done,\ Gilligan said. \Everyone here is real ex- cited, and when people are excited they're easy to work with. As an athletic director, it's been a lot of work — but it has been fulfilling.\ \Right now, winning the champion- ship is more important than basketball,\ Zerrahn said. \Jarred came up to me the other day as said 'Coach, we've got 19 games to get ready for sectionals.' And that's our attitude!\ Willsboro defeats Westport in consi SCHROON LAKE - Willsboro broke open a close game with a big third quarter and claimed a 68-51 victory over Westport in Tuesday night's con- solation game of the Schroon Lake Boys Basketball Tip-Off Tournament. \We picked up a little more pressure on defense in the third,\ Willsboro coach Pete Jacques said. \That produced more tran- sition baskets.\ Nathan Jacques and Jacob James led the charge. Jacques netted 10 of his game-high 25 while James collected 9 of^4p.l- in the quarter. James also added 10 rebounds. Willsboro also received 14 points from senior guard Seth Lessack, who transfered into the district from New Jersey this summer. Scott Sherman led Westport (0-2) with 16 points and 12 re- bounds. Tony Moore added 14 points. The Warriors are off until Dec. 1 when they play AuSable Valley. Custom Canvas champs again SOUTH PLATTSBURGH - Custom Canvas surprised previously unbeaten AuSable Forks 32-0 last week to capture its sixth straight Flag Football League champi- onship and 10th title in 11 years. Butch Proctor threw three touchdown passes and the defense limited AuSable Forks to only one first down while picking off four passes. Scott Carpenter had two in- terceptions with Gary Fessette and Mike Criss each coming up with one. Custom Canvas scored on its first drive, with Proctor and Fessette hooking up on a 15-yard scoring strike. Neil Stevens added the conversion. Carpenter intercepted a Randy Brown pass and returned it to the AuSable 15 where Proctor went to Bryan Foster for another score. Another Carpenter interception put Custom Canvas in business at the AuSable 25 early in the second half and Stevens took it in from there on an end around. Fessette's pick-off and runback to the 15 set up Proctor's third TD toss, a slant across the middle to Foster to make it 26-0. Criss intercepted on AuSable's next possession and Shannon Carter followed with a 60-yard end sweep for a touchdown. Larry Carter, Jeff Smith, Mike Criss and Don Rockwell controlled the line of scrim- mage for the offense while Carpenter, Allen Fessette, Robin Vaughan, Criss, Dale Favreau and Todd Newell spearheaded the defensive charge.
