Use For Records Seen by teial Security Board Many residents of Niagara and Orleans Counties' will sOon i find a new and valuable use for busi- ness, school, fraternal, and <other records long tucked away in at- tics and the bottom of trunks, Harold A. Schafer, manager of the Niagara Falls Field Office of the Social Security Board predicted today. The new importance of these repositories, Mr. Schafer explain- ed, results from th'e development of lump-sum. payments under the Federal Old Age Insurance pro- gram. With the size of the aver- age payment increasing steadily, Mr. Schafer has been instructed by the Social Security Board to inform claimants that, when a claim is submitted which amounts to more than $100, proof of age! will be required except in the case of a claim made by the heirs Or estate of a w!age-earher who has died, where, the clai«n is be- low this figure, Mr. Schafer add- ed, proof is required only when the birth date given in the claim application does not correspond with the Board's records. The week ending July 10 was a good growing week for farm crops. Local showers in parts of the state Were of benefit, but some places are Still bn the dry side, according to the Weather Bureau of the U. S. Department of Agri- culture at Cornell. The Bureau's weekly report continues: \Second crop alfalfa is making good growth. Haying, con- tinues, but is completed in 'some sections. The hay .crop has been good, except in some of the drier sections. Pastures in most areas continue to furnish good feed. \A good crop of wheat Is now being harvested.
