•*——CM n»» r «'mm Tie Hired Girl for tto Epur, When she came to work for the fam- ily on Congress street, the lady of the house sat down and told her that agents, book-peddlers, hat-rack men, picture - sellers, ragmen, and all that class of peo- ple, tmist be met at the front door and coldly repulsed, and Sarah said she'd re- pulse 'em if she had to break every broom-stick in Detroit. And she did. She threw the door Open wide, bluffed right up to 'em, and when she got through talking the check- i-3st agent was only glad to leave it got so after awhile that peddlers marked that house, and the door-bell never rang except for company. The other day,\ as the lady of the house was enjoying a nap, and Sarah was wiping off the spoons, the bell rang. She hastened to the door, expecting to see a kdy, but her eyes encountered a slim man, dressed in black, and wearing •> white neck-tie. Culture of land is necessary in order to make it produce grain and vegetables for our food. It would be folly and wasteful- ness to sow grain upon ground that has not been plowed and dragged. And as much as laud needs culture, so does the body and mind and heart of man. A good sound body is conducive to happiness and prosperity\ as it enables a man to labor to supplv his wants. In order to have it he should cultivate regular habits, and right principles, which contribute to per- fect health.. And to become wise and useful inenibers of society, the mind must be cultivated. This, iu a great measure, devolves upon the parents and teachers of children and youth, for while young the mind i-. active, and learning, is much ea- sier than at a more advanced age. For this put i'e.-'C i-chaois have been established throughout all civilized lands. How vastly ditil>rent is the condition of civil- ized people from that of savages, who have no kind of cultivation } They can scarcely su'.plv ihemseh-cs with food to keep from starvation. Uenerally, they are cruel, warlike a-'rd unhappy wretches ; but when m;..;i.itiarii s are sent atiiong them they (the misNiouaiies) opt-n schools and com- nieiice the euhivation of mindatid heart, and teach them the art of cultivating their kind,, and the benefit it will be to them to 'labor. < J.nubially, they breonio mi intelligent, pruspei\-tus people, if they are so disp-ised. Mo.-d important of all is the Lft-ltiM-'tioii of the heart. Seeds-of evil, i,mi ti by Satan„areconstantly spriug- itigup, ami we should maintain a contin- ual warfare to k<\p them down, and in their stead itiltiv ate virtues. This, also, should be c. mmeneod at an early age, for then the heart is so tender that im- pressions for either good or evil are e.i- silv made, and are more effectual than in later life. A No, faith is stronger. What is more perfect than the faith of a little ehihl ! During the past seven years we have been here for the purpose of culti- vati-u-i'our minds and hearts, for which •our ollieeis and te'.-her- have labored aivluovrslv,. \'lime which waits tin- no maiu\ has brought these years to a C!OM\ and our ('pportuui'ies here are ended.
