The old vets of the N ational Guard can rem em b er w ithout effort the m any stories of w o n d erful accom p lishm ents th a t usually followed the old fam iliar phrase “Now . . . at the Connecticut w ar gam e !” More re cently, w ithin the past year or so, “When we were on the B o rder” has been borne w ith patience and suffering. Now, however, the second battalion of the 105th Infantry has completed a little cam paign of its own which is the pride of every officer and m an in it, and, as far as we can learn has established a new record for hik ing. On Thursday afternoon, just after three o’clock, in the m idst of a heavy shower, the battalion under command of Captain W. A. H. Ely (of Co. G) left the rifle range at Glassy Rock for a two-day hike to Camp W adsworth, each man, of course, carrying complete equipm ent A. Two days sounded like pretty strenuous traveling, for it m e a n t cutting off a whole day from the schedule th a t was in effect on the trip to the range. Seven o’clock th a t evening Motlow Creek was reached and after supper the m a rch was resumed. One A. M. Wingo farm came into view and a short rest and hot black coffee put the men in such good spirits th a t the rem a ining nine miles looked easy. To the tunes of the old fam iliar hike songs the m a rch was carried on. A cold sharp wind th a t blew up put snap and vim into the men as they swung along. Dawn was ju s t breaking and the buglers : lowing first call as the men, tired and happy, stood at attention in their company streets. They swore a solemn oath th a t “bunk fatigue” would be in order until after Easter, but th a t night the officers signed just as m any passes for town as ever, which is a pretty good criterion of the condition of the men. General Michie, Lieut. Col. Liebm an and Capt. Ely complimented the battalion for its record of thirty-one m iles in nine hours and fifty-five m inutes of m arching, for its perfect discipline and for the excellent con dition of the men at the completion of the evening—er—stroll.
