FIREPLACE LITERARY CLUP Alan Pi ice of Center Moiiehcs was guest speaker at an inteiest- ihg program sponsored by the Fireplace Literary Club at t h e Brookhaven Free Public Library May 3. Mr. Price is a British painter. Looking for an industrial commer- cial job , he became a textile de- signer and in 1953 the firm of Jo- siah Wedgewood and Sons aired him to do the design- , on their chi- na for the American market; he came to the States m that capaci- ty. Since then he has been shutt- ling back and forth a few times between here and England. Mr. Price makes very line , in- tricate drawings, about one and a half times the size of the final product , of landscapes , buildings , monuments and other items typ i- I cal of various churches , schools , institutions , colleges , univeioitieb, hosp itals , etc., throughout the Uni- ted States who want then china- ware to be representative of their st.ttus or commemorative of cer- tain historical events , ranging irom a drawing of the Hor- ace Gieeley House in Chappaqua to intricate flag designs aiound a t ypical Texan landscape. He also gave his audience a short survoy of all the processes involved in the making of Wedgewood plates , cups and bowls using for demonstiation an ample supply of his own orig- inal drawings and finished Wedge- wood pieces. The most striking was the larg e Boston bowl decorated with designs adapted from Paul Revere engravings. Since Mi. Price , even working full time, cannot accomplish moi e than two of these intricate draw- ings a week the company had to take recourse to photography in about 75 per cent of the designs ordered. All the actual work is done at the factory in England , founded in 1756; it needs the skill of many different persons from photography through lithography and copper plate etching to intri- cate biushing-on of the design and final glazing. Most of the art work is done in sepia , but a few odd p ie- ces show a variety of colors. Now Mr. Price devotes most of his time to landscape and portrait painting. He lives with his wife, Betty, and two sons , Michael , 4 years , and David , two weeks old , on Laura Lee Drive in Center Mo- riches. Mrs. Byron Athanasiou of Bell- port presided at the meeting. Among the reports that preceded the program was that of the Free Public Library, Brookhaven , giv- ing the total circulation figure of 532 books for the month of A pril. Refreshments were provided by Mesdames A. J. Sauter , Leslie F. Nims and David Alburger. FIRE COMPANY The Brookhaven Fire Company 1 hav e issued its yearly report for the year ending April 30 , 1961.
