OLD FIELD — One ma n drowned and another , an Ep isco- pal clergyman , managed to swim about 500 feet to shore after the 10-foot rovvboat from which they were fishing capsized on Long Island Sound heie last Thursday. Suffolk County Police identified the victim as Felix J. Beck , 49 , of Christian Avenue , Stony Brook. His body was recovered b y grap- pling hooks about two hours after the accident , which happened at approximately 7:22 p. m. Police said the clergyman , the Rev. John P. Mutton , 52 , pastor of the Caroline Episcopal Chuich of Brookhaven , Strongs Neck Road , Setauket , told them they were in the act of changing seats in the boat when it tipped, tin owing him overboard. He said Mr. Beck tried to pull him back into the boat , but it capsized. Both then decided to swim for it. They had covered about 400 feet when the clergyman discover- ed that his friend , had disappeared. The Setauket Fire Department rescue crew was sumoned by a passerby as Fr. Mitton continued swimming to shore. The crew ar- rived just as he was getting out of the water. Police had charged William F, Walsh , of 1 Second St., Bellpon. along with a boy and a girl , pul- led a series of armed robberies last October in the Shirley-Mas- tic-Patchogue aiea. WaLh , who has a previous felony conviction of burglary, was the ring-leader , according to police. Friday in County Court , .J udge Henry Tasker , noting Walsh' s previous conviction , imposed the stiff Sing Sing prison sentence. In other court action Friday, Wayne Emoiy Dell , the 22-year- old ex-Air Force man , accused of the brutal slaying of former Riv- erhead Supei visor Joseph V. Kelly, entered a plea of not guilty to charges of second degree murder , two counts of larceny, and car theft. Judge Tasker set bail for Dell at $25 , 000 , and remanded him to jail to await trial. No trial date has been .set. Police said Dell brutally stabbed Kelly to death in his Riverhead apartment on March 28 , then stole his car and fled to Baltimore.
