Keating announced this week that the route of the Long Island Expressway is expected to run south of the Navy ' s Calverton Field. Senator Keating said that the Department of Defense has re- opened the question of the routing of the expressway and that he expects that f .ne new route wiii be 6 , 000 feet south of the field. The Navy Department had said the expressway would tun north of the field , despite the opposition of local residents and the State Department of Public Works . Sen. Keating met at the Suffolk County Republican head quarters in Blue Point in February, 1960 , with civic leadeis , engineers and residents to learn of the objections to putting the Expressway north of the field. At that meeting- , Sen. Keating was told that the southern route would better serve the north and south fork of Suffolk County, and that land south of the field is un- developed while land north of the field is rich farmland. The northern route would also have been more costl y becaus e it would have been less direct , re- quiring more miles of concrete to be laid , and would have crossed the present Route 25 in two p laces. After hearing objections to the proposed expressway north of the field , Sen. Keating' promised to do whatever possible to have it re-routed south of the field. The senator said : \I feel confi- dent now that the expressway will run south of the field. I am p leas- ed at the action of the Depart- ment of Defense , and I feel cer- tain that this southern route will best serve everyone. \ Suffolk County Republica n Lead- er Arthur M. Cromarty thanked Sen. Keating for \ coming to our 1 county to acquaint himself with local problems. The senator took the time to study our local problem and then to work tirelessl y for our best interests. The result will not onV be a saving of tremendous amounts of money by making the route more direct , but will also best seive our residents. Th ; is a wonderful example of coopera - tion between local and federal government. \ Plane Crashes Sun . on Sunrise Hwy. Extension MORICHES — Edward Stein , 52 , of Bellerose Sunday tried to make the still unpaved section of the Sunrise Highway extension here double as a landing field , but ended up over an embankment in- stead. He had taken off from the Mastic Air Strip onl y minutes be- fore at approximatel y 5:30 p. m. on a routine flight. Mr. Stein informed police that the motor on his single eng ine Aeronca plane cut out shortl y after takeoff and that he had glided the p lane toward the clear- ed portion of the soon-to-be-com- pleted highway. He attemp ted to make an emergency landing* and brought the p lane down , hit the rough terrain and ended up down the embankment bordering the hi ghway. As soon as the p lane came to rest , Mr. Stein crawled out and made his way to Barnes Road. He hailed a passing motorist and asked him to notify police. Police said that he had suf- fered facial injuries when his head hit the instrument panel. He was taken to Bayview General Hos- pital where he was treated for a broken nose and lacerations of the face and released , according to Suffolk County Police.
