TOP SPEAKERS from Seton Hall display new awards they won when they became Nassau County Debate Winners May 13. Shown left to right are : Raymond Hermida , Marsha Stanton , Charles Wellander , Kathleen Holland and Paul Berkel. Stony Brook School was the scene of the Seton Hall debaters ' 1 latest triumph as they won the championship of the Suffolk County Interscholastic Debate Association May 16. Upholding the affirmative side were seniors Kathleen McFall and Kathleen Conlon , while juniors Natalie Lagumis and George Rice debated negative. Miss Mc- Fall is the vice-president of Se- ton ' s Speech and Debate Club. Miss Conlon serves as secretary. Both girls have recentl y been of- fered debate scholarships by Saint John ' s Universit y, Jamaica. In the two-round tournament at Stony Brook the Seton team met Bayport , Bellport and Stony Brook. The only team emergi ng from round one with a perfect rec- ord, Seton ' s negative was matched against Bellport' s affirmative (the closest team to them in over-all point score) in round two. A one point difference decision was rendered by the Walt Whit- man High School judge in favor of the Bellport school. However , over- all points of all debates easily ac- claimed Seton Hall as the tourna- ment winner. Bringing its first year of mem- bership in the Suffolk County In- terscholastic Debate Association to a close , Seton Hall was awarded the travelling trophy. This had been relinquished b y the Bellport High School team which was the defending champion. Seton Hall , Suffolk champion , and Chaminade High School , Nas- sau champion , will meet in a final debate , the date of which has not been set as yet. Win Nassau Tournament Seton Hall debaters won first place in the Nassau County Inter- scholastic Debate Association Tournament held May 13 at the Howitt High School in Farming- dale. Actually a junior varsity team meeting varsity level debaters fi om high schools in Nassau and Suffolk County, the Patchogue team compiled a perfect score with six wins , no losses. In recognition of this , they were presented with the first place school trophy, and individual oscars. Speaking for the affirmative were Paul Berkel and Raymond Hermida , for the negative , Marsha Stanton and Kathleen Holland. The resolution was the high school top- ic for the present school year—Re- solved : that the United Nations should be significantly strength- ened. In the extemporaneous speech division of the same tournament , Seton also swept the field , taking both first and second p lace. First place school trop h y, as well as a first place individual trophy, was won by Charles Wellander. Berna- dette Napoli , also of Seton Hall, followed closely in second place. While present p lans call for the property to remain in its natural state , Mr. Dennison said improve- ment of some of the land for out- door recreation is planned for the distant future. He said a study has been made of \ unemp loyment , welfare , juvenile delinquent , and jail prisoner situations , concern- ing usable manpower for clearing and grooming of the acquired areas. \If and when opened to the public , all operation , administra- tion and control will be under county jurisdiction , \ he said. \However , the property, when opened must be available to all residents of the state. \ The board , on Monday author- ized Public Works Commissioner Herman Bishop to spend $88 , 500 on surveys and appra i sals of the land. Condemnation proceedings , overseen by the County Court, are to follow. Ft may be two years be- fore Suffolk has clear title to all the property, Mr. Dennison said. Heneghan ,. past com- mander of the Suffolk County Council , American Legion , and Commander Joseph Provost of American Legion Post 929 , Cen- ter Moriches. First Vice Comman- der Bruce Mc Leod of American Legion Post 929 will serve as mas- ter-of-ceremonies. A wreath will be p laced at the memorial monument for all Gold Star Mothers by Mrs. Lucille Lamb and a volley salute will be sounded , followed by taps and echo by members of the Center Moriches High School Band under the direction of Chester Osborne , who will also conduct the band in the playing of the National An- them. Graves will be decorated at 7 p. m. Monday by members of the Center Moriches VFW and Le- gion posts , assisted by local Boy Scouts. Commander Emery Tenke is in hopes that no veterans ' graves will be missed this year. Since it is hard to determine veterans ' gra - ves without markers , the war me- morial committee ' s ultimate aim is to provide markers for each indi- vidual veteran ' s grave, Mr. Tenke said. In the meantime , for those graves of veterans not decorated in the past , if a member of the deceased vetera n ' s famil y would be at the cemetery at the time and place , mentioned above , it will not only facilitate the decorating- but prevent the missing of the worjthy graves. Remsenburg Observance Plans have been made to ob- serve Memorial day at Remsen- burg with a progra m of one-half hour ' s duration at the War Me- morial monument on the school grounds. The program , which is scheduled to begin at 11 a. m., is being sponsored and directed by East- port American Legion Post 1545 with the Legionnaires , Eastport Fire Department and other organ- izations participating. Speaker of the day is expected to be John E. Rasberry, chaplain at the Suffolk County Air Force Base , Westhampton Beach , with Leroy Privett of the Eastport Le- gion Post as master-of-ceremon- ies. There will be a short parade , the placing of wreaths and music by the Eastport High School Band. The organizations will go to Remsenburg for the program af- ter their own exercises on the Eastport School grounds at 10 a. m. In Remsenburg, this will be the fourteenth observance of the day on the school grounds. The first year it was to dedicate a service board and in 1948 a permanent memorial with the names of vete- rans of all wars from the Revo- lution to and including World War II was dedicated. And not once has it had to be cancelled because of rain. There will be a loudspeaker on the grounds , which will enable all to hear a service supp lied by Gibson Howell of East Moriches.
