Strickland will graduate June 9 from Nichols Col- lege of Business Administration at Dudley, Mass., where he has been a student for the past two years. During the summer he will serv e as a Lieutenant Life Guard at Great Gun Beach , the Brookhaven 1 Town Beach opposite Center Mo- riches; his plans for the future are still in the making. Peter A. Hornbostel , son of Mir. and Mrs. John Hornbostel of Haw- kins Lane , graduated from the Columbia University School of Law in New York City June 6. He is now studying for the New York Bar examination , to be given in July. In the fall he will go to Vi- enna , Austria , where he will study International Law for one year on a Fulbright Fellowship. Ma\ and Mrs. Dennis Puleston and their three younger children , Jennifer , Peter and Sallie , Bruce and Gail Tooker , all from Brook- have n , and Susan Baker , Elizabeth Honnet , Kathy Cummins and Will- iam Bassett , all from Bell port , and Robert Stewart and Mr. and Mrs. Cooley from East Patchogue went on a camping tri p to Stokes State Forest in north western New Jersey. They left May 26 after school and returned the following Monday around 7 p. m. In spite of the rainy weather they got in two days ' of successful bird' watching, observing especiall y different spe- cies of \Flycatchers , Veeries and Warblers. Sunday the group went to Franklin. N. J. where ' they spent much time inspecting an old mine. Franklinite , a mineral no longer in use , had been dug there in years past. By using an ultra violet lamp they found very rare mineral s like willemite and franklinite ; also cal- cite. On their way home they stopped at Palisades Park with a heightened interest for its geologi- cal qualities. Mrs. George P. Morse recently spent a week with her son-in-law and daughter , Dr. and Mrs. John H. Muller in Shrewsbury, Mass. Mrs. Morse ' s brother and his wife , M'r. and Mrs. H. C. Stelling of Niantic , Conn., are her guests for the time being. Richard T. Beyer , a student at Florence State College , Florence , Ala., returned home Sunday even- ing for the summer vacaton. He has taken a position with the Pat- chogu e Electric Li ght Company. Mr. and Mrs. Michael McKeown of Mott Lane had as their guests Mrs. McKeown ' s mother and sis- ter , Mrs. Raymond T. Hoopes and Miss Janet Hoopes , of Lansdowne , Pa. They came on Memorial Day and left Sunday. A large number of Brownies and Intermediates from the Brookha- ven area took part in the Daisy Day Rally of the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, held at Camp Pa- quatuck in Center Moriches Sat- urdav. Dr. William Bassett of Rich- field , Conn., is staying at the Maust residence on South Country Road for this month. Dr. Bassevt works as a scientist at the Brook- haven National Lab. The South Haven Parent-Teach- er Association will hold its final meeting at 8 p. m. today. No spe- cial program has been announced instead all old business of the past year will be settled. MEMORIAL DAY Brookhaven Post 8137 of The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States conducted a beauti- ful ceremony Memorial Day morn- ing at Memorial Park after the par-ade. Music was played by the Bell port Hig h -School Band. After the national anthem and a prayer , Lieutenant Thomas of the Suffolk Air Force Base in Westhampton Beach gave a short but impressive speech stressing the American ideals of freedom and fa i th . A red , white and blue wreath , the American flag and several flowe r sprays were put at the foot of the monument in honor of the war dead , wherever in the world they may rest. Four Veterans fired three gun salutes; and then a single bugle blew taps while another played a soft echo from a short distance away. The Corporal John Ewing award which is sponsored by VFW , the Brookhaven Fire Department , the Brookhaven Parent Teacher Asso- ciation and Mr. and Mrs. John Mitchell Swing in memory of their son , was presented to Miss Joy Martin , daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Martin of Woodland Road. Miss Martin will enter Cortland State Teachers ' College in Cort- land , this fall -where she will study to be a mathematics teacher. After the ceremonies , the VFW served refreshments at the Brook- haven firehouse. SCHOOL NEWS Ridge Junior Hig h' s Girls ' soft- ball team challenged the girls ' Softball team of Rocky Point School , Monday afternoon , with Charles Barchem , physical educa- tor of Ridge Junior High , the um- pire. At the start of the first in- ning Barbara Cellers was pitcher , Lynn Perry , catcher; Maria La Sauce , first base ; Janet La Flair , second base; Nellie Munez , short stop ; Barbara Manion , third base ; Eileen Naughton , right field; Bar- bara Pentzel , center field; and Sol- veig General , left field. The chan- ges made in the fourth in- ning were Kathline Gordon , first base ; Linda John , pitcher; Leslie Taylor , right field ; and Eleanor Milkunis , center field. ALLIED CADETS The newly formed Farming- ville-Holtsville Allied Nautical Ca- dets went on its first outing May 27 .to the Brooklyn Navy Yard The 44 recruits of the Farming- vi'le-Ho 'tsville Battalion were ac- companied by the Ronkonkoma Battalion. They were able to visit a destroyer and submarine while at the Navy Yard. The adult lead- ers with the group were Mrs. Ja- mes Reilly, Mrs Paul Strub and Frank Mclntuff. The new battalion meets at the Waverly Avenue School , Holtsville at 7:30 p. m. Fridays. Older youths joining the group ' have opportunity for rap id advancement. MEMORIAL DAY PARADE The Memorial Day Parade start- ed at 1 p. m. at the ball park in Farmingville and ended with the laying of a wreath at the Me- morial stone on the grounds of the Waverly Avenue School in Holtsville. George W. Still led the parade ias grand marsha}. Riding in the grand marshal' s car was Alfred Drake , veteran of W orl d War I. The flower wreath was carried by Scout Ignazio Alfano accompanied by Scouts Lorraine Reill y and Su- san Betz. Herman DeCastro , pa- rade marshal , conducted the Me- morial day ceremonies. The Rev. John M. McLoughlin , pastor of the Farmingville-Holts- ville Congregational Church , gav e the invocation. Miss Patricia Sue Riley, soprano , sang the National Anthem. Temple Beth El School Will Have First Graduation The first annual graduation ex- ercises in the history of the Temp le Beth El reli g ious school will be held at 2 p. m. Sunday in the Sanctuary of Temple Beth El. The following students who have attended the religious school for the past five years will be gradu- ated : Adele B ro c h s t e i n , Alan Chaskin , Arline Davidow , Carole Gottfried , Jerome Hastings , Joy Heyman , Karen Kleinman , Sharon Levine , Andrew Medvin , Joel Med- vin , Marsha Papanek , Jan Rosen- blatt and Mark Wiener. The . theme of the graduation exercises will be \Israel - A Dream Realized\ written by Sam- uel Bugatch. It will be presented by the graduating class and the Beth El Choir under the direc- tion of Cantor Max Rajeck , who with Mi-s. Rajeck will serve as soloists. The group will be ac- companied by Dr. Murray Green- berg at the piano. Rabbi A. Irv- ing Schnipper , spiritual leader and principal of the Temple Beth El School , will be the main speaker of the afternoon. Robinson , former pre- sident of Temple Beth El , will make the presentation of the Dr Maurice H. Robinson Memorial Award to the senior who has at- tained the h ighe st scholastic grade.
