Rookies Capture Double Header From Copiague By Bob Morris Fine p itching b y Al Hopf and Jim Buttonow enabled the Patch- ogue Rookies to take both ends of a double header from the Cop iague Cli ppers last Sunday at Copiague. The score s were 4-2 and The Rookies took the first game behind the pitching of Hop f and the heav y hitting of Bud Rooney. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when with two out the Rookies mustere d a rall y. Dave Rooney sent a double down the left field line , Bud Rooney followed with another double to deep left-center , sending home Dave. Jim Buttonow then looped a double over the first basemen ' s head to score Bud. The inning ended when Buttpnow was caug ht try ing to steal third. With one out in the bottom of the fifth Cop iague got its first base runner when Prescia took two bases on a bad throw by short- stop Bud Rooney. Jones then got the first hit off Hopf , a sing le , scoring Prescia. Felot sacrificed Jones ,tp. second , and Nicolini pop- ped , out , ending the inning. Patchogue added two more runs in the sixth when with one down George Kolosa singled and Bill Rooney drew a walk. Dave Rooney grounded to the first baseman , moving both runners up a base. This set the stage for Bud Rooney who' sent home the third and fourth runs of the game with a lined single to left-center. Copiague came to life in the last inning. Fawcett started the inning with a double that Bill Cockerill lost in the sun. Another double by Salanitrie sent home Fawcett and made the score 4-2 in favor of Patchogue. Prescia drew a base on balls and after both runners had stolen , Copiague had the tying run on second base with none out. Then Hopf bore down to strike out Jones , get Fe- lot on a short fl y to left and end the game by making Nicolini his eleventh strike out victim. Both Buttonow and Galipoli , the Cop iague p itcher , breezed through the first four innings of the sec- ond game Bill Kanehl led off the fifth for Patchogue with a bunt. The throw by Gali poli was late and way over the first baseman ' s head. A ground rule enabled Kanehl to keep running and score even though the ball had rolled down a short hill in foul territory. With one out Dave Rooney drew a walk and stole second. After Don Rooney flied to left , Kolosa belted a single , scoring Dave. The Rook- ies got their last run when Bud Rooney hit the first p itch of the sixth inning and sent a long drive over the center fielder ' s head and rounded the bases with the onl y home run of the afternoon. Buttonow held the ~ . Clippers hitless until Fawcett opened the seventh with a Texas League sin- gle that dropped onl y a few feet from second baseman Don Rooney and right fielder Al Hopf. Fawcett took second when Hopf hobbled the ball. Catcher Bill Cockerill threw out Fawcett on an attempt- ed steal. Buttonow then whiffed Garganese and ended the ball game by throwing three strike s in a row to Parks. The double victory enabled the Rookies to maintain undisputed possession of first place.
