JAMES CHURCH St. James Ep iscopal Church has started work on a new belfry. The old one on the roof was re- moved when the roof needed re- pair about 10 years ago and the beams underneath proved too rot- ten to support it. The foundation of the new tower is finished and it is hoped that the whole struc- ture will be comp leted to be dedi- cated on Visitation Day, Jul y 16. Sanford Coleman and Son of Pat- chogue are the general con t ractors and Robert Terwilliger of Bell port the mason contractor. The new belfry will house the old bell which was cast in 1897 by the bell founder Meleeny of Troy. It weigh s 413 pounds aand its opening at the mouth is 27 inches; for the last 10 years it has been resting under the eaves near the louver at the church front. The new tower will be attached to the front of the church and will be shingled to match the rest of the building. The cross at its top wil' charm attached to it; the superin- tendent , Edward Sives , recei/ed a set of cuff links in the shape of c osses and Mrs. Lucia Hubert l eceived a bi ooch m th * same shape. The five acol ytes , Paul Thompson , Greg Schletter , Sanford Saul e , Michael Scheibel and Bill y Carll , received their first year ser- vice crosses and the senior acol yte , Joe Gerard , the service cross with red ribbon. The church school will be closed for the rest of the Summer and. will open again in September af- ter Labor day. Starting Sunday June 25 the services will be held half an hour earlie' than usual , at 7:30 and 10:30 for the Summer; for the latter , bab y sitting will be arranged at the parish house ; the parents, in need of this seivice will take turns in voluntcring in this airangement. be 5 feet tall and at its tip it ' will reach GO feet fiom the g-round. Last Sunday the churc h school awards were presented at the 11 a. m. service; of the 35 children attending classes 15 received at- tendance awaal i . First year p ins were g iven to Cindy Shtppard. Roy Tay lor , son of Mr. and Mrs . Ralph P. Tay lor , who will study at the Suffolk County Community College. Gail Gilliamsen , daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Gilliam- sen of Bay Road , who will star t her training at the Kings County Hosp ital School of Nursing in Brookl yn in September to be a nurse. Joseph Gerard , son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gerard of Edgar Avenue , who has been accepted at the Northrop Institute of Tech- nology near Los Angeles , Calif. , where he will study to be a tech- nician. Island Marine Training Corps Seeking Recruits Boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who are interested in joining the Island Marine Train- ing C^rps may come to the Bay Avenue School in Patchogue at 7:30 p. m. Friday. Any person join ing the corps must have his parents written con- sent on the application blank he will be given upon entering the organization. The purpose of the Island Ma- rine Training Corp s is to teach boys various phases of the mili- tary sciences , including the use of maps , charts and compass , strategy and tactics , and gymnastics and drills. The organization will also seek to inculcate the qualities of self-relianc e , ebedience to lawful authority, respect for the rights of others and loyal devotion to the United 'States Government. Initial membershi p fee will be $2 upon entering and one dollar per month thereafter. This in- clude s insurance for one year.
