OBEDIENCE WINNER—Obedience jud ge Miss trials at Brookhaven Kennel Club Match show Rita Cashy of Bayport gives ribbon and trophy Sunday. Dog is Aleda von Siewal , score 199 , to handler of Waller and Elsie Klimpel' s Dober- Aleda fc h „ TJniondale. man pmscher for highest score in obedience s c By Ed Faust < NORTH BELLPORT — Favor- ed b y sunny skies , a record entry of 185 dogs and an enthusiastic galleiy of some 300 spectators , made Brookhaven Kennel Club' s, AKC sanctioned match show Sun- day the most successful event staged b y the club to date. Scone of the show was the North Bellport Recreation Center , where judging began at 1:30 p. Topping all entries in the breed classes was the red , long-haired dachshund Kara ' s Gay Princess of Nepar owned by Don Battista of New Hyde Park. The Princess , a smart-looking little lady, was plac- ed best in match by Judge Ed- mund Rabut of Huntington Sta- tion. When the final verdict was made there was little doubt that the choice was a popular one. Best puppy in the match was the 10 months-old Doberman pins- cher, Mr. Chairman , put throug h his paces by owner Julian Selden of Huntington Station. The busi- ness of selecting the Doberman was not easy for Judge James Cowie of Commack , as the compe- tition provided by the winners of the 3 to 6 , ' 6 to 9 and 9 to 12 months-old puppy classes was keen. A class that always draws an interested audience is the junior handlers , limited to boys and girls 8 to 16 years old. This is a regularly scheduled feature of Brookhaven shows and is desi gned to further greater interest in pure- bred dogs among the younger set , many of whom will be the sea- soned , habitual exhibitors of to- morrow. In this , the club feels that it is contributing to the promotion of dogs as a healthy hobby for boys and girls. Certainly a happy hobby for young Miss Lisa Braunstein of West Babylon , whose skillfu l pi- loting of her dog, an eight and one half months old English set- ter puppy, resulted in her being named best junior handler by Judge James Wrigh t of Lake Ron- konkoma. It should be explained that in this class the dog is not judged , but the skill with which it is shown is the deciding factor. Another gallery-pleasing event stage 1 by the Brookhaven club is the obedience division. This is di- vided into classes for beginners on lead , novice A and B , graduate novice , open A and B and utility dogs. In these classes , while the dogs must be pure-breds of any breed , they are not judged for quality, but for abilit y to obey the com- mands specified for each class,, and which become progressively diffi- cult as dogs win the scores desig- nated for each class. Honors in this event were won by another Doberman p inscher , Aleda von Siewal , with a score of 199 , which brought ribbon for first together with the club' s obe- dience trophy to owners Waller and Elsie Klimpel of Uniondale. In scoring the Doberman Miss Rita Casby of Bayport turned in another competent job of obedi- ence jud ging. An eriioyed added feature was the excellent demonstration of field work by Ed Funk' s pointer , Pepper. Ml* . Funk , member of Long Island' s Bird Dog Associa- tion , had Pepper simulate the pointing and retrieving of two ca- ged homing pigeons that were re- leased simultaneously wi th the firing of a starter ' s pistol. The birds were later returned to their cages unharmed. Encouraged by success of this and previous shows , the Brookha- ven Kennel Club has applied for AK] C (American Kennel Club, governing body for pure-bred dogs) permission to stage another match show July 23. It is expected that further plans for the show will be discussed at the club' s forthcoming meeting June 27. As customary, the show will be free to the public.
