Site was brought up in an atmosp here of friendliness and al- truism with strong religious back- ground. As a young woman she became a social worker, long be- fore the days of professional soc- ial workers , and a reli gious edu- cation worker in her parish be- fore religious education workers were trained. Mr. Allen , her pas- tor, remarked that when he went to visit the sick , her visits had often preceded his own . Orv^ of her special interests was the Suf- folk County Almshouse at Yap- hank. She was an interesting com- bination of idealist and farseeing business woman. In the ISSO' s, when women began to organize and assert themselves in church activities , the ministers of the 22 churches of the Long- Island Presb ytery felt the time was right f ov n Presb yterian Women ' s Societ y anil it is no small wonder they turned to Miss Smith to head this important undertaking. She was chosen president at its incep- tion in 18S3 and remained in of- fice Ii , years. In 188-1 she organ- ized a group in her own church.
