Riverhead Water To Be Studied By State Health The Rrverhead Town Board last week voted to accept the offer of the New York State Health De- partment which will undertake a four month survey of the River- head Water District in an effort to solve its problems. Residents within the district have repeatedly complained to the town board in recent months about bad-tasting water , and about rust which has been ruining laundry. The State Health Department plans on finding corrective meas- ures to eliminate the rusty con- dition, and to demonstrate that there is no relationship between fluoridation ' and the taste and quality of the town ' s public water- supply. The resolution was introduced by Justice of the Peace Bruno Zaloga , Jr. Voting in favor were Mr. Zaloga , Supervisor William J. Leonard and Councilman Ulick Bell , Jr. Justice of the Peace Thomas J. Costello vote d against the resolution , without comment. Councilman Elmer Stotskv ab- stained from voting, stating a private engineering- consultant firm recently hired could iron out the problems. Water District Superintendent John Riesdorph . who has repeat- edly claimed fluoridation of the public water has caused the rusty condition , claimed the County Health Department is conducting a \ smear campaign against me. \ John M. Flynn , a public health engineer with the County Health Department , recommending the state plan be carried out , said the rust condition is caused by or- ganisms in the water. He urged the district to renew aeration and to reactivate the charcoal fil- tering. The State Health Department made its offer to help the town board a month ago , at a public hearing, to discuss the future .of fluoridation in the water district. State and county health officials and local dentists all urged that fluoridation be continued in Riv- erhead. Opposed to the fluoridation were Mr. Reisdorph and several local residents. Both Mr. Zaloga and Mr. Leon- ard , at the board meeting, said the state will find out whether fluoridation is the cause of the trouble. \If it is fluorida t ion, I will be willing to throw it out , \ Mr. Leonard stated. In other action , Assemblyman Perry B. Duryea , Jr., of Mon- tauk appeared at the request of the town board and pledged his full cooperation in the town ' s ef- forts to impose taxes against the Grumman Aircraft Corporation facilities at the huge Naval in- stallation in Calverton. In 1958 and 1959 legislation was passed by the State Senate and Assembly that would have en- abled Riverhead to tax Grumman for its full interests at the (j . 000- acre Calverton Naval facility. The bills were vetoed each time. However , Governor Rockefeller appointed a commission to studv the possibility of legislation to help Riverhead. Mr. Duryea told the board that the commission ' s attitude was \ negative \ as far as helping. But, he said, that he and State Senator Elisha T. Barrett have been work- ing on the case for two month*. The assemblyman recommended the board work with all interested parties , the County, State , and Federal Governments , even the Grumman corporation , to develop a bill. \Any reasonably drafted bill will pass the Legislature next year , \ he asserted. He recom- mended the legislation be filed bv November. | NEW LONDON FREIGHT LINES , Inc. Summer Schedule :: Year Round Service BETWEEN NEW LONDON , CONN , and ORIENT POINT , L.
