Tietze New York State Division of Veterans ' Affairs INSURANCE: Veterans dis- charged after Januai-y 1 , 1957 , who have a disability due to ser- vice , may be eligible for post-ser- vice National Service Lite Insur- ance. This insurance is available in seven different plans: Five Year Level Piemium Term , Ordinary Life , 20 and 30-Payment Life , 20- Year Endowment , and Endow- ments at aire of GO and 65. Vet- erans who were discharged after January 1 , 1957 , who have no dis- abilities and who have never held NSLI on a premium payment bas- is , are not eligible for post-service GI insurance. CLAIM.S : Claims for the pro- ceeds of government checks which are received by the Treasury De- partment more than six years af- ter the check originally was issued m ' ust be denied. A timely claim for a check to which an individual is entitled , but has not for some reason received , must be filed with the United States General Ac- counting Office or the Treasurer of the United Slates within the time limit ins order that the claim- ant may recover any amount claimed on the check. The basic law in this regard which was amended in 1957 provides that all claims on account of any govern- ment check which appears to have been paid shall be barred fiom payment if not presented within six years after the date of original issuance. BONUS : Applications for the Kentucky state veteran bonus are now being accepted. The final date to apply for this state benefit is December 31 , 1961. In order to qualify veterans must have been residents of the state of Kentucky upon entrance into military or naval service and for six months before that date. Maximum bonus for stateside service is $300 and is paid at the rate of $9 a month. The maximium bonus for overseas service is $500 and is paid at the rate of $15 a month. A maximum may be paid for combination of stateside and overseas duty. Pro- visions are included to pay certain beneficiaries in cases where vet- erans are not now living. In those cases where a veteran died in ser- vice , the maximum payments auth- orized for either stateside or for- eign dut y may be paid and the requirement of 90 days of active service does not apply. Forms for this state bonus may be obtained with the assistance of this office or from the Administrator , Vet- erans Division , Department of Mil- itary Affairs , Commonwealth of Kentucky, Lexington , Ky. LOAN'S: GI loan installment payments on GI mortgages are due on or before the due date of a particular loan. There is no grace period which would permit a delayed payment of an install- ment due on a GI mortgage. Late payments may subject a veteran to an extra service charge imposed by the holder of a GI mortgage when a payment is not made when due. Questions about the rig hts and benefits of veterans , servicemen or their dependents may be sub- mitted for individual attention to the NYS Division of Veterans ' Affairs or the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency at 21-3rd Avenue , Bay Sh o re ; County Cen- ter , Riverhead , and 44 Elm Street , Huntington.
