Baldwin of Pine Street , East Moriches , en- listed in the United States Army June 14 for a period of three years. He will start his fifth year of military service , having completed four years with the United States Air Force , from 1956 to 1960. x * COMPLETES COURSE— Army Major David E. Grange , Ji\ , whose wife , Lois , lives at 4 Cherry Street , Lake Ronkonkoma , com- p leted the legular coui'se at the U. S. Army Command and Gen- eral Staff College , Fort Leaven- woi th , Kan., June 16. The 36- year-old officer is the son of Mrs. Hemietta Mizgier , Lake Ronkon- koma. The class of 666 U. S. officers and 84 officers from 43 allied na- tions were addressed by _ General Lyman L. Lemnitzer , chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff , who was introduced by Major General Ha- rold K. Johnson , school command- ant and commanding geateral , Fort Leavenworth. Following the ad- dress the graduates received their diplomas from Bri gadier General William A. Cunning ham , assistant commandant. The college , the Army ' s senior tactical school , was established in 1881 as the School of Application of Infantry and Cavalry. The re- gular course is designed to pre- pare selected officers for duty as commanders and general staff offi- cers at division , corps and field army levels. During the 38-week course Maj. Grange received train- ing in command and staff opera- tions , nuclear weapons emp loy- ment , conventional and unconven- ti onal warfare and recent signifi- cant combat developments. The major entered the Army in 1943 and was last stationed in Germany. Maj. Grange has been assi gned to the office of the Assistant Chief of Staff , Intelligence , Washington , D. C. Kuss v \Suffer in silence \ seems to be the byword of many of our re- tired people today. Month by month , an oppressive weight d settling on many of our senior cit- izens. Caught between rising pri- ces and dollar devaluation , forced to live on set incomes , they are constantly sacrificing more and more of the bare necessities of life. Every week , an increasing num- ber of elderly retired men stop in and ask foi- woik to supplement their income. In many instances , an amount sufficient to pay then- increased school taxes offeis some relief. Never once do they expect something for nothing, for then- pride will not Jet them. To place the burden entirely upon the younger generation who are strug- gling to raise a family and pay off a mortgage is not the answ er either , and our retired folk aie aware of this. If the pi'esent administration in Washington is determined to pro- vide federa l aid to education , a portion of these funds could ab- sorb a percentage of school taxes paid by retired individuals who are not allowed to eai-n more than a m 'inimum amount under Social Se- curit y. Our elders have long \ been used to making their own way without complaint and because of this , many of their problems today have been negl ected. The need is appar- ent for zoning to provide the type of economical residential construc- tion for our senior citizens , rec- reation facilities designed for rest and lelaxation , and a method to relieve iinancial buidens by pro- viding an outlet for the talents and abilities acquired through a life- time of hard work , which are an asset thi- , country can ill afford to lose.
