Anticipated District 24 Fall Enrollment 5, 085 Jr. High Double Session: The approximate projecte d enrollment in September , 1961 for Patchogue-Medford School ' District 24 is 5 , 085 , an increase of 3G2 students over the 4 ,723 students m the district on June 23. The figures were comp iled hv Superintendent of Schools Dr, Alden T. Stuart as part of the district' s student enrollment projec- tion from 1960 through the aca- demic year , 1964-65. The school district will have ad- ditional teachers for the next school yea r , Dr. Stuart sard. Twelve of the teachers will be emp loyed in the junior high school , which in September will h.i\ e a morning and afternoon session in eac h of the seventh , eighth and ninth grades. Bids are expected to bo adver- tised in the near future , Dr. Stuart said , for construction of the $2 ,350 , 000 junior high school , which was approved by votei s April 8. Bids for the ^T M O.OOO re- novation of the present junior high school on South Ocean A\ e- nue , also approved April 8 , will be advertised at the same time , Dr. Stuart said. Enrollment in the district' s four elementary schools is expected to rise from 2 , 801 on June 23 to 2 , - 940 , Dr. Stuart said. Anticipated enrollment chan ge s for each school , he said, is as follows: Bay Avenue , 693 to 760 ; Medford Ave- nue , 783 to 825; River Avenue , 521 to 540, and I remont Avenue , 817 to 815. Number of students at the pres- ent junior high school , Dr. Stuart anticipated , will increase from 1 , - 217 on June 23 to 1 , 325 , and at the senior hi g h school from 704 to 820 students. Language Instruction Next Fall , Dr. Stuart said , lan- guage instruction will begin in the seventh , instead of the ninth grade. Three of the new teachers will be for the increased language instruction. Also at the junior high school there will be another guid- ance person , home economics teacher and librarian because of the double session. Teaching po- sitions will also be filled in the science and music departments , Dr. Stuart said. At the senior high school will be a new girls ' physical education instructor and English teacher. On a district-wide basis , Dr. Stuart said , there will be a new reading consultant and two nurses , bring- ing the nursing staff to seven per- sons. The district' s nurses , the superintendent said , also serve needs of the parochial school stu- dents. Dr. Stuart said an additional kindergarten and first grade teach- er will be at the Medford Avenue School , and an additional fifth grade teacher at the River Avenue School. Bids for the renovation of and addition to the Medford Avenue School , will be opened at 3 p. m. Jul y 18, Dr. Stuart said. Blue Poin t FD to be Host To Annual Parade , Drill BLUE POINT—The Blue Point Fire Department will be host to the fire departments of Brookhaven Town at their thirty-fourth annual parade and drill to be held on Middle Road on July 22. The parade will begin at the intersection of Park Street and Blue Point Avenue and proceed down Blue Point Avenue to Middle Road and east on Middle Road to ^\ - the new bathing beach at Core y Ave nue . The drill will he held on Middle Road with the grandstands sot up in the parking field of the bathing beach. The Brookha\cn Tow n drill is different fr om those which were held a few \ears ago , in that no motorized equipment rs to be used. As many peo p le will recall Brook- haven Town used to hold drills similar to that of the larger drills still held , such as the Suffolk Coun- ty and Southern New York drill . These drills were discontinued a feu year- ago duo to the lack of pat ticipation b\ the \an ' ous lire departments in the town. Th ree \eais ago the Yap hank Fire Department held an old-fa- shioned drill and because of the interest shown in this affair , the Medford Fire Department held another old-fashioned drill last yeai. A* a result of the interest shown m both of these drills , a g r o v. p of interested firemen throughout the Tow n of Brook- haven got together and reactivated the Brookhaven Town Racing Team Cap tains Association , which had not been active since the town diills were discontinued. Since thi<- organization formed in the earl y part of this year , it has grown to include members from more than twenty companies and departments in the town. These men from this association have gotten together and formu- lated a set of rules , based on the State Racing teams ' captain ' s rules , which have no motorized contests included in them. Because of the fact that no motorized ( quipment is used in these con- tests , it makes it easier for the average department to partici pate witl out having to buy any expen- sive equi pment. The drill in Blue Point will have six contests in it , which include the three man ladder , individual ladder , running hose , cart hose replacement , efficiency and buc- ket brigade. Fourteen teams have thus far been entered. The contests will be run on Mid- dle Road and there will be amp le seating in the grandstands for in- terested persons. Town officials have been invited to attend the affair. Ex-chief Richard Berg of the department is the chairman of this affair. General jud ges will be Walter Ruland , Haskell Warner and Wil- larrl McGinnis; timers , Frank Holzmann , Al Sti g and Frederick Slater. For loading and starting, Richard Boddy, Lonny Maletta , William Petty and Fred Bachtel- er; at the finish , Henry Raymond , Howard Brown , Arthur Mapes and Charles Miller; at h ydrant , Wal- lace Roth , and Cyril Davis , and the parade judges , Hi Smith , Ja- cob Kellas and Arthur Miller. Cromarty withdrew Zahn ' s Airport and Deer Park Airport from consideration as part of the county airport system at the Suffolk County Board of Supervisors meeting here Monday. The Babylon supervisor introduced the resolution because \ no assurances could be obtained that « the airports once incorporated in the count y sysem would not be ex- panded. \ The resolution was sec- onded by Supeiw ISOI Thomas J. Harwood of Isli p and wa., unani- mousl y passed by the Suffolk County Board of Supervisors. Supervisor Ciomart y took the action which affects onl y airports in his own town under a clause of the original resolution ci eating a county wide system which gives the local town first approval over all aiipoits to be established , ac- quired or expanded in that town. The Bab y lon Town Board passed a similar resolution Friday. The Bab y lon Town Board based its ac- tion * on the following: (1) \The county executive has on \v arious occasions recklessl y proposed four different airports in the Town of Bab ylon without regard to the cost thereof and the effect on the local residents. \ (2) \The count y executive has repeatedly advised local civic groups that once approved for Federal funds the town would have no voice in the airport pro- gram. \ and (3) \There is no assurance that any airport in the county system would not be expanded to the de- triment of the local residents. \ The proposals advanced by the county executive for airports in the Tow n of Babylon have been a $40 ,000, 000 jet airport partl y in Babylon and partl y in Hunting ton , the expansion of Deer Park Air- port from 50 acres to 370 acres , the expansion of Zahn ' s Airport from 130 acres to 210 acres , and the establishment of a 210-acre airport at Bergen ' s Point in West Baby lon. Supervisor Cromarty said he has opposed all of these proposals be- cause the airports in quesion are adjoining residential areas and would create dangerous safety conditions for the homeowners and their children as well as causing a great deal of disturbing noise.
