Lee Dennison Suffolk County Executh e On e of tha basic pail s of p lan- nin g work is to determine the best ut. e oi toe la.id lor tne gieates o economic return consistent with a d esirable ba anced pattern of growth and development,, in other uoida , p lanning is intended to lind out whether the land is best fitted for agncultuie , o r housi ng , or industry, or w hatnot , in relation to t i ansportation , Ire sh water supp l y, tne disposal of garoage and sewage , the utility pattern , schoo l s , recreation , sh o ppin g cen- ters , employment , and all the other i tems connected with overal l p lanning. Coo rdi nated studi e s of the use o f land ha v e ne v er before be e n undertaken in Suffolk. We are now do i n g it , com p ilin g the pat- tern of tne existing use of the .and so that the remaining open areas , a t le a st , can be intelli gentl y and reasonably planned and zoned tor future d i rected and poss i bly more desirable growth. The work was d el a yed for more than a year in hopes of obtaining the property map of the Count y, which would have provided not only the vitall y-important tax map but a lso the basic ma p for all p lanned work. That project was l ost in p oliti cs , and we were there- fore finally forced to buy a copy- lig ht use of a map traced by one of the utilities from old aerial p hotographs for our land use studies. If you see our planning people looking over youi propert y, do not be alarmed. The y will onl y be trying to find out how your pro perty is being used and it does not m e an that your house w ill be torn do w n tomorrow for a new factory. Once the pattern of pre- sent land is comp leted , it will be made a va ilable to all local p l an- ning and town board agencies , with whom we hope to review the voik toward an oveiall coordinat- ed pattern of local p l a nnin g and zonin g among the 10 Towns. Our major objectives , of course , lie main ' y j n c ontinuity o f p lan- ning and zoning between town boundaries , th e e stabli s h m ent of clear and firm purposes and goals therein , and action and accom- plishment relative t hereto. As stated so many times before , we must find out what we have to work with , determine w hat can be best done with it for the great- est common benef i t at lea s t cost , e s tabli s h purpose, set up definite schedule s of procedure for attain- ment , and g o to work to g et it done. > WITH FULL STEAM AHEAD , members of th e Brookhaven Town Board are shown preparing to launch boat for Cherry Grove and Ocean Bay P ark on Great South Beach Saturday.
