Rates High: PERUVIAN VISITORS at home of their grandparents , Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bernstein of Chichester Avenue , Center Moriches , Patricia and Carolyn Bernstein , left to right , take time out from vacation fun to pose for Advance Photo. By Yolanda Blechner Patricia and Carol yn Bernstein , who are vacationing with their paternal grandparents , Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bernstein of Chicheste r Avenue , Center Moriches , will start their Winter school term August 14 , the opening day for schools in Lima , Peru. The girls reside m Lima witn- their parents , Mr. and Mrs. Mer- wm Bernstein. Patti is a fourth giader , her sister a third giader. They attend a private school where they are taught Spanish and English. Their school system is similar to that of ours , the girls say, basing- their comparison on a brief samp le of Center Mori- ches Elementary School life last September when they were here visiting, with their parents last year. Patti and Carolyn enjoy watch- ing television in America. They have television at home , but most piograms aie in Spanish with a few American releases like \Lassie \ and Disney productions which ha\ e proven to be favorites with both. Patti' s favorite pro- grams here are \Robin Hood\ and \My Little Margie. \ Neither are shown in Lima , but Patti did say that \ Ivanhoe , \ an Ameiican pro- duction, is aired in her country. According to Mrs. Bernstein , both girls are excellent swimmers. Patti loves to draw girls , especi- all y ballerina and Peruvian danc- ers. Grandmother is always read y to praise her works of art. Patti was interviewed by telep hone and holds an intelligent conversation with haidly a trace of accent . She said that she has a new telep hone at home and that it is more modern than ours , because the onl y time that she comes in contact with the operator is w ith an emergency call. Patti who will be nine years old November 5 , and Carol yn who was seven May 28 , flew as unac- companied minors , via BOAC jet from Lima to Idlewild airport where they w r ere welcomed by their grandparents , their paternal gieat-grandmother , Mrs. Edith Carter of Chichester Avenue and their aunt , Mrs. Alfred Debler of Union Avenue , both of Center Moriches. They live in the suburbs of San Isidro in Lima. Their father is a senior geologist for several large mining companies whose mining products are mainl y copper. Pat- ricia and Carol yn were both born at Cerro de Pasco , a mining town of approximatel y 35 , 000 inhabit- ants , with the majorit y being Indians. The elevation of the town is 14 , 900 feet. When the g irls were asked if they felt any of our customs seem peculiar or strange to them their onl y comment was about our eat- ing habits , that we eat supper so very early. The Peruvian custom is to eat supper usually between nine and 10 p.m. The reason for this late supper hour is that be- tween the hours of 4 to 7 p.m., the custom is to have a tea hour. A siesta period is observed daily there as in many Spanish lands. It begins at 12:30 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. at which time every store is closed and peop le rest for the day. Talking about hours , the girls were delig'h ted to know that it doesn 't darken until after 8 p.m., for at the present time , it gets dark around 6 p.m. in Lima. Indian people still cling to their traditional costumes Patti and Carolyn like the month of December , because on the 15th they begin their Summer vacation from school. They do not leturn to school until April 1. The month of January is their hottest month of the year. They travel to and from school by bus. School hours are from 9:30 a.m. till 12 p.m. and again from 2 to 4 p.m. Kinderga rten for Peiuvian youngsters beg ins at the same age level as here. But Peru - vian children go into what Patti calls \transition , then into the first through fifth grades. All this is accomplished in seven years , accoiding to Patti. Then they enter into \ media \ which runs from first to 10 grades , after which they enter \Cam - bridge \ . At present the g irls have no knowledge of American history. They have been taught Eng lish and Peruvian history. They weie proud to make it known that they are members of the U.S. Brownies , and they didn 't fail to praise their green uniforms. While staying in Center Mori- ches they especially enjoy swim- ming at the Mill Pond in East Moriches and the Phoenix Day Camp in East Moriches , which is co-directed b y her uncle , Alfred Debler who teaches at Center Moriches High School , and Zollie Privett , who also serves the Cen- ter Morirhes school as principal. Their busy vacation schedule also includes visiting the dentist. A main object of their interest is a swing they wish they could have in Peru. Patti was asked what she would like to become when she glows up and with a sigh her answer was , \Just a p lain old lady, like you and w r rite stories for the papers . \ Patti said that her sister had wanted to be a cowgirl ever since she was little. The city of Lima and country of Peru is situated about 1 , 000 miles from the equator , making it a warm climate all year round , but during Winter month s , which is now , most of Peru is covered w ith gray clouds. Although there i? much dampness , it very seldom ever rains along the coast.
