German Shepherd Tops In Kennel Club Show By Ed Faust <? NORTH BELLPORT — Owner Frank Vazquez of Huntington Station was a proud man when his 11 months old German shep- herd walked off with honors as best puppy and best of all the dogs at the A K C sanctioned match show staged b y the Brook- haven Kennel Club on North Bell- port grounds Sunday. The dog, a handsome specimen was p ' aced best puppy by judge Tom Okun of P' ainview , while la- ter when entries were lined up for best in match Mrs. Arthur Hiirgens of Syosset , jud ge for this final and top event of the show. ' named the shepherd as her choice. The competition was keen as the Brookhaven shows are attracting an increasing number of top-flight entries. Tho shepherd , a lad y of the breed, oddly enough does not as is usual bear a German name but is registered under the imposing Spanish Cora del Rancho Yeijo. For the benefi t of those unfa- miliar with the world of show dogs , the name by which a dog is registered with the American >Kennel Club usually has little re- lation to its name around the ken- nel or if its a house pet , as many arc , what name it answers to at home. Its officia l name may be Angel' s Breath of Colonsay (so help us , that was the catalog name of a Madison Square Garden entry). At home that same dog- would probabl y be called Pete or maybe just Hey You. I As the American Kennel Club ' does not permit duplication of registered names and carries names of thousands of dogs on its books , the naming of a show dog is not easy, and likely to be un- usual to say the least. Best adult dog in match was a Staten Island Doberman pinscher owned and shown b y Randy Bush- man and judged by Mrs. W. Ketch- em of Huntington. The Doberman was in fine condition and well earned her rating. One of the interesting features of the match was the junior hand- ling class won by Miss Bonnie Proctor of Huntington Station with her black Labrador retriever , \Angus \ .
