Two nights later Blue Point tied up the Wot.in Le.mue iacc- with a d-1 v ictory over Lou Redmond' s Mul l-land nine . With onlv a few weeks remaining in each of the ba g ue laces , we can look for anything to happen. For althou g h the Coi-Ace team is h ading in the east and Blue Point and the Colts in tin wi&t . the oth r dubs battling for league laurels are still verv nun h m the nu. and < v en though some are out of the uinmng ' as far a- they thi nisolves are concerned they can piov e ni s tiumental in deciding who will finish in front by coming up with a big victoiv in th e closing stages of the lace. MIDGETS \E\U1NG END -Unlike the junior play, the midget p. rfi imors of Vic Uanta lb om Middle Island and the Yuma A from the East End. appear to hav e ju st ah-nu clinched the crowns m their respectiv e leagues . A< foi the Noi th Bellport League—the pi renmal champs of Skip Henry, known as the Red Rockets, are cuuentlv mivin g alon g m limb feated style , with onl y the NBAA Bbu k of Ed Hanigan standing in their wav. The Rockets and the NB VA nu et m an impoi tant \ ontest this week which will go a long wav m eb t eimimng the eventual outcome , as far as league stand - ings aie conc erned The Red Rockets, xvbo have for the past two si asons captured the tow nship midget title, although not as strong as m previous reasons , still have a well balanced club who on a mv ui night, have w hat it tabes to upset stronger teams. If forced to make a long range prediction , however , we would have to say that the East Ende' s of Mike Figlui7' /i and Al Musetti appear to hav e the inside tuak toward the tow n ciown this season. The \SI MA hav e ouite a few returnees from last year ' s team , and in games to date hav e bee n bl ushing aside all opposition in the East End art a However , thi< opinion is irn rely conjecture on our part and it gx' s withou t saving that the biggest mistake the East End champs could make , would be to take too lightly their coming meet- ings with the Mid-Island and Noi th Bellport champs, for more often than not it is the bad bounce , the pass- d ball o the accidental bloop single on a ducked swing which decides the championship tilts in the midget class. SLO-B VLL TOURNEY—P. < e Poulos is optimistic about the success of the post season tourney to be conducted among slo-ball t. ams at the Shore Fi ont on Sep tember 1, 2 , 3 and 4. Earl y indi- cation s aie that teams heie in the local area are looking forward to the affau- with eager anticipation , all figuring that they have a good chance to sweep on through to victory. To date , the Brook- haven Asphalt. Ron & Bill' - , the Rockets AC and Hagerman from the North Bellnort League have indicated that they wish to be nu hub d. while Ral ph Waters ' Safeway Builders from North Patch- ocrue are al-o set to enter. Add to these, the strong clubs of the villa g e league s and those from other recreation departments here ni tm county, it would be our guess that the overall number of team- will total clo-e to 25. This will mean an action-packed four etav- of slo-ball at the Shore Front site. Pete tells us that he will irnno-. a gienmd lule at the park , whereby a portion of the left * • Id feno will be marked off «o that a ball clearing that section will !\¦ • declared a ground rule double. This we feel is an excellent idea as n w ill Tt an that anv circuit clout in the tourney will be one t' v.t in no wav i- ori< ntal by nature. The age limit also has been wa.vtd which will me an that those teams stocked with youth will , j ii oi ,; opiP T on . hav e a very definite advantage over tho' -e whose i u ei .- l- comprised primaril y of men around tho 30 level—for as t 1 • v -a\ ,n th. fight game , \ a good big man is better than a good bfie man \ By the same token we must also go along with the x> oi y that a good young man is better than a good old man (ath- k* i adv -p. aking) . Neveitheb s- it would b\ unfair to teams from ot , e-i -.ct on- to t* 11 th em that they must knock off players of y u'ig'-2 y(r:.r* and. <:<; we mentioned previousl y 7 , we feel that the dab- who plav heic m the village and the town would rather enter x< e to.anty w ithout having to accept concessions from the other v ams. Team- wishing to be included in the slo-ball tourney should sub- net xhnr playing roster to Pete Poulos at the Four Sisters Rec. ( ' ' i i m PdtchogUe without delay, so a> to permit time to arrange tie pan logs of opening round competition. He picked up a ride now ;md then in a sood car , but more often than not , Joe just had wheels under him. Now it's differ- ent and Collins is zooming to the top of the hill. The reason ? Collins picked up j a steady ride in the sawed-off 10- i Cents and it turned out to be a terrific combination. Collins won the 25-lap combination main at JRheihead last Saturday—his sec- i ond main-go checker of the sea- j son. Promoter Ed Hawkins will pre- sent another stock-car show Sat- urday with three big features : Jalopy, sportsman and modified- sportsman. And , of course , an- other game of automobile demoli- tion tag. Sp ider Ligon defeated Charlie Turbush in last week' s crow d-pleaser. Silas Hiscock of Bridgehamp- ton continued his great driving and won the 20-lap sportsman main and Mike Goss in No. 19 captured his second jalopy fea- ture victory of the season. Hiscock beat out Jim Malone , Bert and Buzz Hedges in that or- der , while Goss led Bob Kull , Leo Ceckowski and Buzz Hedges ac- ross the line in the jalopy main. The best racing battle of the night was for second place in the combo. Bert Hedges , Silas His- cock and Jim Malone fought all the way for second behind winner Collins. The three cars were never more than several feet apart as they changed positions until Bert Hedges in No . 44 took second , Hiscock in the Flaming Seven copped third and Malone in No. 34 finished fourth. It was one of the best three-car battles seen at Riverhead in some time. Riverhead continues to draw moie cats each week. Fields of 17-18 cars in a consi are usual and the jalopy main always goes over the 20-car mark. All of which makes for top-notch racing thiills and excitement at Long Island' s onl y quarter-mile , high- banked speed track. The first race Saturday is set for 8:30 p. m. Here comes the bride !
