F-H Association Asks Town , County Support County Exec Questioned: Th. ' Farmingville-IIoltsvillo Civic Tax Payers Association moved Friday !<¦ ask the Brookhaven Town Board to pass a resolution .irjrii 'ii\ the lv>ard ol \ trustees of Sutl' olk County Community College to change the college ' :-, postal address from Selden to Farmingville. The unanimous action of the association was taken at a meeting in the Farmin gvil ' e fire house at- tended h y approximate l y 12f> per- son- - , in. .udi'iir (Vaniy F.xecutive 11. l. i'e IVnnison , Supei-visor Aug- u>t Stout. ,I r., Councilmen .lohn Folv y and Willard Keddy and Town Clerk Robert Cooney. The association expressed the hope that the tow n hoard would pa-s th.- resolution favoring its position and then send the resolu- tion to the County Board of Su ¦ pervisors for action. The association argues that Far- mingville should he the postal ad- dr. ss of the college which will open Sep tember at the site of the for- mer Suffolk County Sanatorium. This position is taken principally on the grounds that a May, l-^O county resolution identified the sanatorium a* being located in Farmingville when the county ex- ecutive was authorized to dispose of the site. The sanatorium p icked up its mail at the Holtsville post office. On the other hand , the Selden Civic Association contends the col- lege is in the Selden school , light- ing and fire districts , and notes that in February, 1JW1 , the trus- tees established Selden as the pos- tal address on the basis that the Selden post office could give city (deor-to-door delivery) whereas the Farmingville post oflice gives mral delivery. in his opening statement , Mr. Dennison , a Democrat , said five members of the board of trustees were appointed by the former Re- publican administration and four by the governor. ' \The board of trustees (of the college), \ Mr. Dennison continued , \is somewhat autonomous in op- eration. The board set the post office address and it is a decision the county can 't do too much about. 1 understand that the trustees eventually expect to set up their own post office. \ Donald Cody of Holtsville , ques- tioned , \If the county appropri- ates money for the college , wdiy can 't the County Board of Super- visors order the trustees to take action on changing the postal ad- dress to Farmingville?\ He went on to charge the county executive with being \ evasive. \ \I don ' t believe 1 have the repu- tation for being evasive , \ coun- tered Mr. Dennison rather heated- ly. \How can we say to the board of trustees that you can 't have any money if you don 't change the post office address of the college?\ Questioned by Alan Brand , Mr. Dennison said the county board of supervisors was the local sponsor of the college, controlled approp- riations to the college , and scru- tinized and approved the college ' s budget and educational and opera- tional program. \If the name of the hamlets of Farmingville and Holtsville is changed to the village of College- ville , \ Mr. Brand questioned , \ would you favor Collegeville de- livering the community college ' s mail?\ The association has said it is considering petitioning for incorporation of the hamlets into a village of Collegeville. The county executive parried the question with the statement , \I should think you would be proud of the name of Farmingville. \ La- ter , he said , \I would not be in sympathy with this community changing its name. \ Mr. Brand said the trustees \ may be technically correct\ in choosing the postal address as they did , \but they are not ethically or morally correct\ and contended that Farmingville has \lost\ ter- ritory through the postal address being established as Selden. He argued that the postal delivery boundary has been moved from the north to the south side of the col- lege. On the other hand , Charles E. Gorman , regional services anal yst of the U. S. Post Office Depart- ment told the association June 30 that the trustees have the right to choose the postal address of the institution since it is located on a postal delivery boundary (Col- lege Road , formerly Sanatorium Road). Stout Speaks After Mr. Dennison ieft for an- other engagement , Mr. Stout was called upon to speak. lie said the town board is working to set up boundaries for hamlets. \There are no definite lines for hamlets , \ he continued. \Boundary lines which have been used have been election districts , fire dis- tricts and school districts. For in- stance , assessment rolls are set up by school districts. \ Carrying forward Mr. Denni- son ' s point about the relative autonomy of the college board of trustees , M' r. Stout observed that the Suffolk Count y Water Auth- ority is appointed b y the count y, but the county does not dictate to the special agency. \Is a count y resolution binding on the college board of trustees?\ Mr. Cody questioned Mr. Stout. \No , \ said Mr. Stout. \Can the college trustees ig- nore the boa rd of supervisors?\ questioned Mr. Cody. \Yes \ Ma\ . Stout said. \I challenge the discretion of the board of trustees to do this (set Selden as the college postal address), \ said Mr. Brand. Mr. Brand , a Lake Ronkonkoma at- torney retained b y the association , ruled out the use of a motorcade b y the association to the county board meeting as being too \ emo- tional'' a gesture and \ subject to misinterpretation. \ On a motion b y Jose Sanchez the association voted unanimously b y voice to ask the town board to pass a resilution favoring their position. (Rte. 112), PATCHOGUE :: GRover 5-1133 a QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Q. What causes the stars to twinkle ? The twinkling of the stars is caused by interference of the light rays which reach us from the stars through the earth ' s at- mosphere. The atmosp here of the earth at all times contains parti- cles of dust , water vapor and other substances , and it is these minute particles coming between the observer ' s eye and the lig ht rays from the stars, which inter- fere or \turn aside \ the light rays , and cause the appearance of twinkling.
