Slate Title Competition Town Rec. Committee Doings: By Win Olms SET DI VMOND FINALS—With the 1961 Summer seaso n now in its waning weeks , Brookhaven Town Recreation Director James Reese is looking ahead to the big games which will determine the town champi. ns in the baseball , softhall and slo-ball leagues. In the midget dhision , league champ ions have alread y been crowned and are waiting patiently for the big games which he ahead. The midget finals w ; ll open Mondav night at the Mt. Sinai diamond as the Ridge 1 nine of Art Albers takes on Skip Henry ' s Red Rockets , winners of the North Bell port League . On Tuesday night , Vic Ranta s Middle Island Rams will lock horns with the Mastic ^iUMA A of Mike Fi-'luizzi and Al Musetti at the North Bellport Recreation Field. Tlu> two winners will meet for the town championship August 21 at a neutral fi.dd. All of these games w'll be p layed beneath the lights and if the competiti on will be anything lik» that of previous vears some excitin g innings of diamond activity are m store for our town fans . The j uni or division finals will get underway August 23 at Center- each with games also being p layed at the Mastic Beach Field August 2-1 25 2S and 29. The junior finals wil 1 wind up August 30 at Centereach with all games being p layed at night. As of this date , onlv one j unior champ ion. Joe George ' s Co-Ace team , winners of the Fast rn League has been crowned. In the western half of the town program , il.cVe is r' .rv indicatio n that a tie will result between Howard Uugan ' s Blue Point team and the Middle Island Colts of Charlie Rnu kner . If this situation comes about, a one-game p layoff will be held to determine who will represent the Western League. The N H'thern League champ ion will also be crowned this week , after wh' vh th- stage wil' be set for the final games. The junior round rrhin wdl consist of a home and home affair , with each team p lay- ing the otht r team two games, with the team winding up with the most victories being declared the town champ ion. In the men ' s slo-ball competition , the Safeway Builders won the North Patchogue title, last week by downing the Medford Brau Haus 17-7 to win the second half title. In that game , the men of Ral ph Waters also won the first half race. They took the league cham- pionshi p without the necessity of a playoff. The North Bell port League will wind up its race this week as Hagerman and the Brook- haven Asphalt battle it out for top honors , while in the Northern Brookhaven section, it will be either Doy le ' s Paddock , second half champs or the Tinker Bank winners of first half action represent- ing their league . Like the junior baseball p layoffs , the slo-ballers will also battle it out on a ' home and home basis with each entry meeting the other league champ twice. Game one will be p layed August 21 at the North Patchogue Field. The action will _ switch to Mt! Sinai August 22 with the August 23 and 24 games being p layed at North Bellport. The August 25 game will be played at North Patchogue with the finale taking p lace beneath the Mt. Sinai arcs August 28. ' The softhall p layoff s are , as this date , currently being planned and the dates on which they are to be held will be announced some- time this week. TOUCH FOOTBALL—Looking ahead beyond the diamond p lay- offs, the Brookhaven Town Recreation Department is p lanning touch football program , with all of the competition being staged beneath the lights of the town recreation fields . Leagues will be established for boys and men of all ages with games being p layed each night during ' the months of October and November. We feel that the touch football activit y is an excellent idea as it will provide re-creational activity for our town athletes during a period which is normall y dormant. Jim Reese has sent out the word that now is the time for teams to submit their rosters. Be sure to include the name of your team and its age bracket, also the address and telephone of the team representative. For those of you who wish to be included but are not on a team, it is suggested that you forward your name , age , address and telephone number to the recreation office at the Brookhaven Town Hall in Patchogue and an attempt will be made to place you with a team in your area. TENNIS TOURNEY—The big town tennis tourney is set for the weekends of August 19 and August 26 with all of the action taking place at the courts situated ai the Miller Place School , the town pool in Centereach and the village courts on Rider Avenue in Pat- chogue. The tournament will include Senior Division competition for contestants 19 and over. Junior division matches for those between the ages of 14 and 18, and open competition in mixed and men ' s doubles are also included. Response toward the tournament to date has been encouraging and it is expected that some exciting matches will be forthcoming. Trophies will be awarded to the winners in each class. :. ' £. A : ' ; ODDS 'N ENDS-—In one of the most exciting finishes in many a season. Jim Kelly with a perfect four for four against the Brook- haven Asphalt, nosed out Mel Santamaria and Bob Staab for the league batting crown. The Hagerman leftfielder finished with a .616. four points ahead of Santamaria. Bob Staab , who had led the way most of the season , managed onl y three hits in his last 10 trips to finish with an even .600. Stan Cox and Greco put on a repeat performance of last year ' s race for RBI honors with Cox edging Greco 32-33. Phil Sweeney of the R o-ckets led the home run parade with nine. Jack Mahe.r of the Rockets and Stan Cox of Asphalt were tied for second with eight . . . The year ' s number one upset in North Bellport play came about in the final week , when Dan ' s Cruise Inn , with a season record of 3-10 , up-ended Ron & Bill' s, 15-12. Our vote for the most improved p layer in the league goes to Joe Wakie of the VFW. Wakie , after going five for 14 in fi rst half p lay, hit safel y 15 times in 29 tri ps in second half action to finish off with .465 . . . Most improved club in the league was the VFW who wound up second half p lay in a tie with Neppell' s and the Rockets with three victories and four losses. Tom Neppell , Jr. was the walking man of the circuit , having worked opposing chuckers for 15 passes during season play . . . Strongest throwing arms among the outfielders belong to Tom Nep- pell. Jr. and Charlie Grecco while our vote for the smoothest work- ing iniielder would go to Tom Murphy of the Asphalt. If Dan ' s Cruise Inn can polish up a position or two next season , it will be a definite contender . The team has a strong left side in the inner circle with Skell y Frei at short and Yinny DeMaio at third. We doubt if there are any two teams in this area who put on a better show against each other than do the Asp halt and Hager- man. Their games are usuall y packed with excitement , as was the case last week when Hagerman , trailing 12-0 , finished strong to lose out , 15-10. If the Brookhaven Asphalt have a weak link , we would have to say it is lack of depth on the all-important bench. This incidently is one of the major assets of the Safewav Builders. Ralph Waters is fortunate in having on his roster , a group of dependable per- formers who consiste n tl y show up with the interest of the team foremost in their minds . . . Ronnie Wadsworth expects to enter the village slo-ball tourney at full strength with the return of John Luongo who has been away at school during second half play. The Rockets AC, Hagerman F.D. and Brookhaven Asphalt are also en- tered m the big September round robin . . . Howie Lee turned in a fine job for East Patchogue with 24 hits in 51 at bats to lead his club with a neat .471.
