Federal Judge Harold Medina Finds Boat Sunk Federal Judge Harold R. Me- dina strolled down to the beach from his Summer home on Apau- cuck Lane , Westhampton , Sunday morning, to check on his yacht , the Spendrift II , anchored 200 feet off shore in Moriches Bay. The 46-foot cruiser , valued at $75, - 000, was almost out of si g ht , with its hull resting on the bottom in about six feet of water. Twelve hours earlier at 9 p. m. Saturday, according to Southamp- ton Police and the Coast Guard , the judge ' s yacht was struck a g lancing blow on the bow by a 16- i ' oot inboard speedboat. Late Sat- urday night , Avedik Akopian , 36 , of 69-48 Kessel Street , Fores t Hills , who is vacationing in West- hampton , reported to police he had struck an object in his speedboat , while cruising on the bay in the darkness. Authorities didn 't worry about the incident until Sunday morning when Judge Medina called. Both police and the Coast Guard are in- vestigating the incident. No charges have been filed against Mr. Akopian. Mastic FD Band Sets Fre e Concert Aug. 25; Majorettes to Twirl MASTIC — The Mastic Fire De- partment Band will present a free concert at 8 p. m. August 25 at the Mastic Fireball. Valentine Tagliavia will conduct the 40-viece brass band with a pro- gram of varied marches and pol- kas. The band' s majorette? will al- so entertain with baton and flag twirling. The concert will be held rain or shine and all area residents are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served. The band won first prize re- cently in a parade in Flanders and second prize in Old Quogue. They expect to parade in Hagerman Monday, in Mastic Beach August 30 , and in Centereach August 31. It was strictl y a p itchers ' duel , with C. Hartman doing the hon- ors for Center Moriches. It was 0-0 until the bottom of the third when Kern walked. Hartman hit a grounder towards second forc- ing Kern out. Reed walked forc- ing Hartman to second. Roth singled and Reed and Hartman came in to make it 2-0. It was quiet until the top of the sixth when Westhampton opened up with a single by Van Hoesen fol- lowed b y a homer by Adler to tie it up two all. But Westhamp- ton didn 't quit there. Loyafa walk- ed , C h e r b o n e singled , Wright singled driving in Loyafa for run number three and Ulan singled in Cherbone for number four. Cen- ter Moriches had the last half of the sixth to recover but couldn 't and it ended 4-2 Westhampton on five hits , with two hits for Center Moriches. The winning pitcher for 'he visitors was Ulan and the los- ing hurler for Center Moriches was Hartman. Burg lary N ets $167 At Mastic Beach Shop ,MASTIC BEACH — Anthony Del Dora of 265 Titmus Drive , Shirley, told police Sunday that $167 in bills and change were stol- en over the weekend from the Sun- flower Coffee Shop of which he is proprietor , according to Fifth Precinct police reports. Police said entry was gained to the Neighborhood R o a d store through the rear door. They said the screen door had been forced open and the main door had been pried open with an imp lement af- ter a pane of glass had been re- moved. According to police the cash re- gister had been broken open and money in the form of bills and nickles , dimes and quarters in rolls had been stolen. Also , police said , two pinball machines had been broken open and an unde- termined number of dimes remov- ed from them. Last week a person or persons stole $3 worth of coffee cake which had been left in front of the store by a bakery, police said. Patrolman Charles Rattigan in- vestigated the case. MASTIC BEACH — The Sheeps Pen Point Rod and Reel Club has scheduled a clambake for members to be held at 4 p. m. September 9 at Captain Andy ' s. At a recent meeting of the club ; p lans were made for a fishing contest to be held over the four- day Labor Day weekend. A prize will be given for the largest catch. The last two fishing contests were held August C and August august 6 and August 15. R. Simran received a prize for his catch of a 3 pound 3V 4 ounce striped bass. This is believed to be the biggest bass caught in the Moriches Bay area this season. A prize was given to Albert Jara for his catch of a 2 pound 14 M> ounce striped bass. Campai gn Fund MASTIC BEACH — Through the combined efforts of the Mas- tic-M o r i c h e s-Shirley Democra- tic Club and the Mastic Beach Democratic Club a fund-raising dance was held Saturday night at the Mastic Beach Democratic Club- house on Locust Drive. Over 200 persons attended the affair and proceeds will go to- ward the Brookhaven Town Dem- ocratic Committe e Campaign Fund. Refreshments were served by the fiance committee and music for dancing was furnished by the Mel- ody Masters. Vocal selections were rendered by William Viola , Mrs. Kay Harkin and Mrs. Helen Mil- ler. Town officials attending were Democratic Chairman , Dominic Baranello. Town Clerk Robert Cooney and Councilman Howard Rowland. Those serving on the dance com- mittee were Eugene Amarri , Charles Fisher , Paul Chappell and Bill Jones. Floyd Grid Practice Begins September 1 Physical examinations and the issuing of equipment for William Floyd varsit y and junior varsit y football candi- dates will be held August 31 at 8:30 a. m., Hal Morpurgo , head Colonial coach , has an- nounced. On Sep tember 1 , regular sp lit practice sessions will be- gin. The boys will bring their own lunches and be on the field in uniform b y 9 a. m. Afternoon practice will begin at 1:20. Bus transportation will be provided for all boys beginning September 1. Coach Morpurgo hopes for a large turn-out. He stresses the fact that no positions have been filled and the fact that veterans and new men alike will have the opportunity of winning a position.
