S'H C BKACH-— A separation of 12 years came to a dramatic climax rev eiitly when .Io* >e Pit ' en er of Beaver Drive * b*ft New York Inter national Airport at Idlewilel. on an Iberia Airlines plane to begin the fi rst part of his journey to Spain , bis former homeland , and a reunion with relatives. They were scattered b y the Spani. -di Civil War and had, uj* until a few years ago , so thor- oughl y lost trae -k of each other, that eac-h thought the other members of the family dead. A nephew who came to this coun- try after months of letter writ- ing and contacting friends finally establishes] that Ids uncle -lose was still alive and sent bavk tie u'lad news to Sp ain. Little won- der that Mr. Piferror was dete r- mined to once again travel to Spain to be rounded with his sis- ter , uncles and aunts. The plane stopped at Lisbon and then continued on its way to Madrid. With a stopover at Madrid he was met by bis sister. Mrs. Maria SanPedro at Santiago. She had undergone much emotional stress and anxiety :v\d fainted. Upon her recovery they motored to Palnvira , his eld home, where a group of uncles and aunts , 25 nieces and ten nephews had as- sembled to greet him . He received such a warm welcome from all Mr. Piferrer said , and attended so many parties that the time seem- ed to fly by. Almost before he knew it , he said , the time h a el come for him to return to h i s family in the United States. With the affectionate fa rewells of his relatives ringing in hi s ears Jose Piferrer stepped aboard the p lane in Santiago , embark- ing upon the first leg of his journe y back to America. All of a sudden the quietness was shattered by an explosion a n d he noticed that two of the en- g ines of the plane were on fire . Later. Mr. Piferrer said , it was because of the skill of the ex- perienced pilot at the controls that the plane was prevented from crashing into the -city be- low . Clearing the city the plane crashed in a potato field at the outskirts. Mr. Piferrer wa> for- tunate enough to be able to get up and walk away from it ail. Most of the passengers were onl y shaken up and slightl y cut or bruised. In the crash Mr. Pifer- rer ' s mementos of Spain were smashed beyond any hope of sal- vaging them. Although he was sorry to disappoint bis family he-re , he said , he still had much news to toll them. The rest of his return journey was quite un- even! tul , and he arrived in New York where an eager family waited lo hear all about his trip. While his material keepsakes were lost, he said the dearest keepsakes of all were in his heart and mind and he is looking forward to making another trip in the future .
