PELCO is Resurveying Lighting in Patchogue The Patchogue Electric Light, Company is in the process of resurveying the lighting system in the Village of Patchogue , Village Trustee Donald Schneider reported Monday at the regular meeting of the Village Board. In reporting on a meeting August 21 between village represen- tatives and employes of PELCO. Trustee Schneider said: \The lighting company has agreed to re-do its system of bill- ing to the village. \ ?j i Questioned about the trustee ' s statement , Leslie Weiss , president of PELCO , has stated that his company will bill the village in any form it may desire. Recently, Mr. Schneider , chair- man of the village ' s lig hting com- mittee , claimed that PELCO s sys- tem of billing the village \is not efficient. \ Commenting upon the August 21 meeting, Mayor Robert T. Waldbauer said Monday : \We all learned a lot. PELCO made a master study of li ghting in the vilage in 1945. PELCO is going to make a survey of eac h lig ht and make recommendations for lighting on secondary streets. Consideration is being given to extending the new mercury vapor lights along West Main Street to the western limit of the village. *' Special Meeting In a special meeting the night of August 21 the board approved the application of Theodore and David Rosen of Patchogue for the rczoning of a seven-acre tract on Rider Avenue , Patchogue , from B to C residence zoning. The rezoning app lication for permission to build garden apart- ments was opposed on the ground s that it would cause \downzoning \ in the area , constitute a traffic hazard lo children , upset the water level of the vicinit y through which an underground stream flows and take away renters from Summer residents who rent out their homes during the Winter. Conditions p laced by the board on its approval of the application stated that no more than 21 apart- ments may be built on the tract l ying on Rider Avenue , between Smith and Brook Streets. Also , a minimum setback of 40 feet from Rider Avenue is required. The app licants may not alter the flow of the stream and must respect the rights of property owners along the stream. The property must be cleaned of dried grass , weeds , brush , bullrushes or any other in- flammable material. And structu- ral construction must begiA within one year of publication of the zoning change or the tract reverts to a B residential zone. Theodore Rosen of 17 River Ave- nue , and David Rosen of 99 Park Street had ori ginall y app lied to place 32 famil y units on the tract, but presented the 21-apartment plan to the board on August 14 at a public hearing. Centennial Plate At the Monday meeting Miss Laura Ebell , town historian , show- ed the board the Brookhaven Civil War Centennial plate which is on sale at her office in Town Hall , Patchogue , and at the museum in Swan River School on Roe Avenue . The painting on the plate was done by Bruce Terry of Shabcr Road , Patchogue. It shows t*i e Brookhaven Town seal with the date of 16S6 and the D for the Duke of York , King James II , who was reigning in England at that time. In the back ground of the seal are the \ lines of Blue , '' re- presenting the Union soldiers go- ing into battle , a p icture of the drum carried by the Patchogue company which served in the Army of the Potomac , and the in- scri ption , GAR Post 210 , Patch- ogue , L. I. Asks Report Mayor Waldbauer asked the Vil- lage Sewer Committee to meet with Superintendent of Hi ghways John Belzak to determine when James Hawk , village disposal p lant operator , will be able to return to his job and if he will be p h ysi- cally capable of carrying out his duties. Mr. Hawk is in a Brooklyn hosp ital with a leg infection. Mr. Waldbauer instructed the committee , including Trustees Charles Miller , chairman , Mr. Schneider and Robinson Roe , to make a report at the next board meeting and recommend a replace- ment if Mr. Hawk will be unable to return to his post. Trustees Robinson Roe and Charles Miller were absent from the meeting. pllllllllllinillllllllHlllllllllllllllllinilllllll ^ x= = I Allen 0arks Blpts , hit. | FINE FOOTWEAR ^= | I • ANDREW GELLER | = 2 c= I • GAM INS || \_\ __w I • BARE-FOOT ORIGINALS | — E= • MEZZO ( • BRITISH BREVITT | 1 • PAPPAGALLO 1 • COORDINATED HANDBAGS \ === 5E I • SHOES and BAGS , Custom D yed I = n — §_ J • AAAA to C — SIZES 4 TO 10 | SB HH == ; jEs 294 MAIN STREET HUNTINGTON , N. A frican Scholars Need Aid To Attend Adelphi-Suffolk Last September some 250 stu- i dents were airlifted from Kenya ,, Tanganyika , and Uganda with i funds provided by the Joseph Ken- nedy Foundation , according to the Unitarian Fellowship of Brookha- ven. The African-American Stu- dent Foundation had arranged scholarships at colleges in the United States and Canada for them. Through contacts made by Ed Pearson of West Sayville , chair- man of the Unitarian Fellowship of Brookhaven , and with the co- operation of Dean Ferraru and other officials at Adelphi College , two scholarships were made avail- able at Adelphi College Suffolk Division. The names of the two young men from Kenya who have been selected to attend Adelphi are Na- than K. Saziru and Francis Ge- tao. There is a problem that must be solved before they can take ad- vantage of their scholarships. Homes must be found and funds must be provided for their main- tenance during the schoo year. A start has been made towards accomplishing each of these goals. Dr. Samuel Ristich , a Patchogue resident , and research scientist with Olin Mathison Company, has offered to house one of the stu- dents. Members of the Brookhaven Fellowship have started to explore the possibilities of raising money to assist these students. Deadline for the students is Sep tember 13 , orientation day at Adelp hi. Ef- forts are being planned to contact ministers of local churches and other individuals who may be in- terested in the cause of support- ing the educational opportunity that has been offered to these dis- placed students. All individual of- fers of help can be co-ordinated by contacting Mr. Pearson , 49 Fifth Street , West Sayville , LT 9- 4628.
