BAY SHORE—John L. Barry, commissioner of the Suffolk Coun- ty Welfare Department , and Lou Tempera , labor lepiesentative of the Long Island Fund , w ere prin- cipal speakers at a kick-off meet- ing for the fund' s current drive held recently at the welfare de- paitment building in Bay Shore. Purpose of the meeting, spon- sored by the welfare unit , of the Suffolk County Civil Service Em- ployes Association, was to ac- quaint staff members with the Long Island Fund. Thanks to a local law enacted last Cring by the Board of Supervisors, workeis in all the county departments will be able this year, for the fiist time, to contribute to the fund through payroll deduction as do the personnel in private business and industrial firms. Mr. Barry, a member of the re- view' committee for the Long Island Fund , said that enploye contributions would be entirely voluntary and that payroll deduc- tions would be a convenience for many who wish to hel p support the community agencies in the fund. \As employes of a public wel- fare agency, \ said Mr. Barry, \ we realize, more than most people , how great a gap there is between what can now be done by the private health and welfare agencies and what needs to be done. The aim of the Long Island Fund is to fill that gap and the money we give , through the easy and relativel y painless way of pay- roll deduction , will hel p to do it. \ After viewing a color film which showed several of the local hospitals and agencies which be- nefit from the fund , the group heard Mr. Tempera outline the ad- vantages of the fund way of giv- ing. He stressed the lowered costs of administration and the maxi- mum benefits to the participating agencies , and answered many questions during the discussion period which followed. The meeting was conducted jointly by Mrs. Esther Tallamy of Sayville , president of the welfare unit , Suffolk County Chapter of the CSEA , and Mrs. Arleen Feu- ille , Babylon , Long Island Fund chairman for the welfare depart- ment.
