DEDICATION of Suffolk Rehabilitation Center for Physically Handicapped on Indian Head Road , Commack , was held Sunday. Center was erected bv volunteers of building trades under auspices of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Suffolk Countv. Value of building is estimat- ed at about $500, 000. Platnick' s Photo Service Brookhaven Laboratory Dedicates Alternating Gradient Synchrotron U PTON—The world' s largest® and most powerful particle accel- erator, the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS ), was dedicat- ed yester day at Brookhaven Na- tional Laboratory here. Brookha- ven is operated by Associated Uni- versities. Inc., for the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The dedicatory address was de- livered by Dr. Leland J. Ilaworth. member of the Atomic Energy Commission. Dr. Havvorth . who was director- of Brookhaven Na- tional Laboratory from 1048 until his appointment as a commissioner last A pril , has given vigorous leadership to the AGS project from its inception. He served as chairman of Brookhaven ' s Accel- erator Development Department, which was responsible for the de- sign and construction of the AGS , until November , 11)50 , when the present chairman , Dr. G. Ken- neth Green , was appointed to that position. The dedication ceremonies fol- low the 19()1 International Con- ference on High Energv Acceler- ators , held in New York City and Brookhaven from Sep tember 6 throug h 12. The conference , spon- sored jointly by the International Union for Pure and Applied Phy- sics, the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission , and Associated Uni- versities , Inc., has been attended b y over 200 of the world' s out- standing scientists in the field of hig h energy accelerators. Construction of the AGS , which includes 240 magnets p laced in a ring-shaped , 18-foot square tunnel one-half mile in circumference , was started in late 1955 , following several years of preliminary de- sign work. The tota l cost of this hi g hl y comp lex AEG research fa- cility, including a 63 ,000 square foot service and laboratorv build- ing, and an 83 , 000 square foot ex- perimental buildinir , is approxi- matel y $32 , 000,000. Following the completion of tho AGS in earl y 1900 , it underwent a period of testing; the fi rst acceleration trials were made on July 22 , and protons were first accelerated to an energy of 30 billion electron volts (Bev) on July 29. Since that date , the AGS has been improved , auxiliary equipment has been in- stalled , and the research program begun. The machine can now de- liver a peak energy of 33 Bev. Its normal operating energy is 30 Bev , at which level it can deliver a pulse every 2.4 seconds. The pulse rate can be increased to 1 .6 seconds at 20 Bev , and 0.8 seconds at 10 Bev. The experimental use of the AGS represents an important step forward in USA EC-sponsored stu- dies of nuclear forces and the pro- perties of sub-nuclear particles. It is enabling scientists in the United States to study nuclear inter- actions at energies about five times greater than ever before possible in this country. Since 1954 , the most powerful accelera- tor in the U. S. has been the 0.2- Bev Bevatron at the University of California ' s Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. With a machine in the 30-Bcv range , physicists at Brook- haven expect to learn more about the many kinds of particles , such as mesons and hyperons , and the various \ anti-particles. \ At such energies ,, it is possible to produce quantities of anti-particles , espe- cially anti-protons , which appar- entlv do not exist in our universe but must be produced from energy. Most of the elementary particles produced by the interaction of the high energy protons with the nu- clei of the target atoms exist out- side th\ atom for onl y a fraction of a millionth of a second before they decay into other particles , or- change their mass comp letely into energy. These brief lifetimes , how ever, are long enough for the particles to be detected by instru- ments—counters , bubble chambers , or photograp hic emulsions—and to determine their - mass , electrical charge , and other properties. Mrs. Thomas Home of Saun- ders Avenue was charged with manslaughte r in the first degree in the death of her cousin , John W. \Sam \ Woods , 29 , of Railroad Avenue August 11. According to Fifth Squad detectives, Mr. Woods , a laborer , was found dead at the Saunders Avenue home with a knife wound in his chest. Mrs. Home fled the scene , police said , and was arrested earl y Au- gust 12 b y Fifth S quad Detective Sgt. Robert McCleary and Det. Kenneth Lowderr when she turn- ed herself into the Center- Mor- iches substation of the Fifth Pre- cinct. She was arraigned August 14 in her room at Brookhaven Me- morial Hospital b y Brookhaven Town Justice of the Peace Milton A. LaGattuta. Mrs. Home waived examination to await action of the Grand Jury. According to the de- tectives , Mrs. Home si gned a statement admitting she knifed Mr. Woods , but claimed that she did it in self-defense after he had beat her with a steel rod. Accord- ing to police records , Mrs. Home and Mr. Woods were cousins.
