Sears declared. \Teachers \\1 o leave our dis- trict for a better pac ing position must be rep laced. \ Mrs. Seals -aid. \Some go to teach elsewhere , some aie orl' eied jobs as princi- pals . Some go on motherhood leaves . All must be lep laced. \We must not onl y rep lace these , we must keep the ones we ' \e got. \ M rs. Seat s stated that the aver- age teacher in the district is 3(5 years of age and has fi\ e years of college credits. She said the board doesn 't expect them to all leave at once for higher-paying districts any more than they would be expected to strike for more monev. Another bone of contention has been transportation. Mrs. Sears said that the district , after a A ote , had committed its . vjf to eig ht buses three yeai - ag * . A five-year contract was si gned. \The s tate law concerning school bus contracts declares that there be no escape clause in the contract , \ Mrs. Sears said. \For examp le , if a district contracts for a certain number of school buses and a man buys them in order to fulfill his end of the con- tract, what would happen to his financial obli gations if the school district was allowed to back out v henever it p leased , \ As for austerity. Mrs. Sears stated : \Public education is the char ge of the whole country. The austerity budget was designed by the State Legislatuie for the pio- tection of the public , parents , ch i l- dren and school board in the sense that schools cannot be closed if the disti ict fails to pass a bud- get. \ Under the present austeriU budget in District 1 , th e dist r ict' s lunch program has been cut out. transportation has been curtailed , parents must now rent school books for tl oir children , major maintenance has been stopped, as has been interscholastie activities . The new S2 . 291 . 178 budget to be voted on Sep tcmbei 20 would mean a tax rate of from $10 .10 to $10.28 per $100 of assessed -v alu- ation , Mrs. Sears said , based on the district' s estimated assess- ment fi gures. Last year ' s rale was $8.88. It was stated that the tax rate for the state required auster- ity budget would be about $9.46. The second proposed budget, which totalled $2 , 329,700, was de- feated June 13 by 220 votes.
