They provide interesting sup- plement to classroom work at East Moriches School when Mr. Huson puts them on display. —Advance Photo 9 By John Clark ' RAST MORICHES — Since the advent of television , school' teach- ers have been faced with a con- founding problem , that of making the \Three R' s \ as palatable to students as Red Buttons , Rin Tin Tin and \Riding Shotgun. \ Afte r all , it' s hard to follow a top-notch comedian , and , besides , what school system could afford their gag writers ? For many years . Harry W. His favorite avocation is col- lecting historical and commemo- rative blue p lates and whaling implements. His 150 blue p lates , made most- l y by Staffordshire and Wedge- wood , have been struck off to memorialize famous battles , presi- dents and landmarks. Mr , Huson often arranges the p lates in dis- p lays at the school. Throug h the p late collection , such slices of Americana as the Battle of Con- cord and President Eisenhower ' s Gettysburg Farm are made a lit- tle more vivid to East Moriches students. Mr. Huson ' s growing collection of whaling imp lements began when he was teaching about local industries down through the years. Since whaling is an industry which has been long absent from the Long Island scene , he needed visual aids to get the lesson across. Project Land Purchase CENTER MORICHE S — Tax- pa\eis ot Union Fr >e School Dis- tiict 33 will be called upon October 19 , by the Center Mo; idles School Loai\l to vote on a two-part prop- osition involving th<> purchase of three acres of land and the sub- sequent erec.ion and equi pp ing oi a s x-roeni extension , to Comer Moriches Elementary School , Stan- ley Abrams , supei vising principal of Center Moiiches Sciools , an- nounced Monday. Negotiations en the first part of th' 1 proposition , the purchase ol school mnd direct y west of the elementary school, have been in progress ihreughout the Sum- mer , Mr. Abrams said. The land , pioperty of the parish of St . John s R. C. Church , a.id site of the old St. John ' s School , is ap- proximatel y Kin feet in fiontage and 800 feet deep, extend' ng to ihe Long Island Railroad tracks on Brookfield Avenue. Representa- tives of St. John ' s parish and ¦ he Roman Catholic Diocese of R^ckville Centre have agreed to sell the parcel of land for $'J 7 , - ;00 , described by Mr. Abrams as a \fair price \ en the basis of an appraisal made by the board. The second part of the proposition calls for the building of an ad- dition to the elementary school which will house two kindergarten and four elementary school class- rooms. The board would finance the cost of the building, $202 , 000., and the land , $38,000 through a 20 year bond issue of $240 , 000. Mr. Abrams said that the board felt it necessary to bring the proposition before the taxpayers of the district at this time be- cause under the present law Dis- trict 33 will soon be ineligible for emergency building advances be- cause of normal reductions ia its debt and yearly additions to its assessed valuation. Also , the board feels the fact that District 33 is facing overcrowded conditions , that building costs are expected to rise and that this would represent the last phase of the district' s building program , making tax- payer action important at this time. Cost of the 20 year bond issue per $100 of assessed valuation \Vould be between 25 to 30 cents , Mr. Abrams said. Taxpayers of District 33 who reg istered at the last annual meet- ing of the school board are eligible to cast their ballot in the October 19 voting. Those taxpayers who did not register for last year ' s meeting may become eligible to vote by registering Monday, Octo- ber 9 , and Wednesday. October Continued on page 4 , this section.
