PTA Workshop Planned Sept. 30 in Patchogue The first meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association Council of the Patchogue-Medford School District 24 was held at the Patchogue High School September 12. Presiding over the meeting was Mrs. Charles Rohde , council president. Present were : Mrs. Norman Lech- trecker , first vice president; Mrs. Kurt Behme , corresponding secre- tary ; Mrs. Harold Bates , record- ing secretary, and Arnold Gile , treasurer. Also present were Mrs. William Matsnuaye , Mrs. Orville Meyer , Mrs. Charles Silhan , Mrs. Muriel Lechtrecker , Richard Mauer , John Tabone , Spencer Lowell , Robert Hildreth , and Richard Majetic. Mrs. Rohde announced that the district will act as hosts to the l!)(i l Fall Conference of the Suf- folk Long Island District , to be held September 30 from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. at the high school. Registration and \ coffee time \ will take p lace from 9:15 to 10 a. m. From 10 a. m. to noon there will be workshops. Lunch will be served from noon to 12:45 p. m. It is . suggested that mem- bers attending bring a box lunch , since only beverages and dessert will be available. Fro m 12:45- 1:15 p. m. a film will be shown. It will be followed by a business meeting. Workshops will continue from 2 to 1 p. m. A workshop is a small face-to- face group in which members ac- tivel y take part . They locate their mutual problems , anal yze them , find solutions to be tried out in action , and evaluate their way of working together. They are also an important training ground for future PTA leaders. Among the varied subjects be- ing offered at the workshop are : \Develop ing PTA Leadershi p, \ \PTA Financing. \ \PTA Leg isla- tion , \ and \PTA Education for Responsible Parenthood\ ( for the pre-school and school age child). Also \Effective PTA Program- ming, \ \PTA Publicity , \ \PTA Councils. \ \Building PTA Rela- tions . \ and \PTA—The School— The Community . \ All PTA members are welcome to attend. Hostesses will be repre- sentatives from all the local schools. Chairman and co-chair- man of local arrangements are Mrs. Charles Rohde and Mrs. Har- vey Gehri g. Mrs. Rohde announced also that a Patchogue-Medford PTA dinner for council members will be held on October 7. Arrangements are being made by the dinner commit- tee consisting of: Messrs. The first meeting of the Bay Avenue School PTA will be held 8 p. m. Tuesday in the school cafeteria. Mrs. Orville Meyer , president , announced that the meeting will be devoted to meeting the faculty and that an opportunity will be given to visit the classrooms. Blue Point was third. —Maple Leaf Photo Service The Center Moriches Fire De- partment won the Hagerman Fire Department invitational tourna- ment , Saturday, compiling a total of 2b Vk points. Centeieach was se- cond with l\) \- 2 points. Nineteen teams entered the tour- nament , competing in seven events. Blue Point was third with 14 points. Many Brookhaven Town Fire Department Association re- cords were broken. The results were as follows: Three-Man ladder , Centereach , 7.5 Center Moriches , 7.7; Van Guards of Patchogue , 8. (3. Cart Ladder , Cente r Moriches , ( J.0 ; Centereach , 'J.5; East Moriches , 9.7. Running Hose , Center Moriches , 15.1; Cen- tereach , 15.3; North port , 15.5; Manorville , 15.5 (tie for third place). Running Hose Replace- ment , Blue Point , 21.6; Center Moriches , 24.3; Eastport , 24.5. Efficiency Contest , (tie for first) Center Moriches , 10.U ; Centereach , ,10.9 ; Lakeland , 11.8; Blue Point , 11.9. Bucket Brigade , Blue Point , 31.4; Van Guards of Patchogue , 38.2 ; Center Moriches , 41.6. Blue Point won a trophy for the running hose , replacement event. The trop h y was donated by Roland Miskosky of the Hagerman Fire Department. Blue Point is the first team to win the trophy. The trophy must be won three suc- cessive times by the same team in order to be kept permanently. LaGattuta Submits Program For Creach , LG Development Brookhaven Town Justice of the Peace Milton A. La Gattuta last week proposed a 10-point program to improve the traffic , lighting, library facilities and general development in the Centereach and Lake Grove area. The program was outlined in a statement to the Centereach Chamber ol Commerce , center- each Taxpayers Association , Cen- tereach Civic Association and Greondale Civic Assocaition. \I believe the improvements are essential for the establishment of a well-rounded community and are meant to encourage the orderly and healthy growth of the com- munit y as a p lace to live and to work , \ Mr. La Gattuta said. The program is as follows: 1. The establishment of a si g- nal light and other pavement markings at the intersection of Eastwood Boulevard and Route 25 , and at other congested inter- sections. 2. A clean-up campai gn to halt the excessive littering and dump- ing of trash and other unsi g htly matter on the public streets and roadways of Centereach and Lake Grove areas. 3. Strict enforcement b y law enforcement officials of the speed limits on all state and town road- ways within the communit y. 4. Restriction of further permits for gas stations and other unde- sirable businesses. 5. Extension of lighting for all portions of Route 25 and creation of sidewalks in developed areas. 6. Establishment of public li- brary facilities in Centereach proper . 7. Construction of more East- s' West thoroughfares where pos- sible on both the north and south sides of Route 25 to facilitate in- ter-town travel. 8. Additional and improved pub- lic transportation from Center- each to all points. 9. Increased emphasis on teen- age activities by governmenta l and private agencies. 10. Expansion of shopping faci- lities to all portions of the com- munitv. Unitarians to Present 'Masque of Reason ' I \The Masque of Reason \ by Robert Frost will be presented at the opening meeting of The Uni- tarian Fellowship of Brookhaven , Sunday, at 8:30 p. m. in the Pat- chogue YMCA on South Ocean Avenue. The public is invited to attend. The play revolves around a con- versation between Job , his wife , God, and the devil on Judgment Day. The roles will be played by Jack Camp bell , Patricia Ralph , and Kay Karoly of the Unitarian Creative Worship Workshop in Huntington. This workshop has been experimenting over the past year , under the direction of Albin Bauman of The Sunken Meadow Life and Art Center , with methods of presenting religious ideas to others in a more provocative and stimulating manner. TO BE SUCCESSFUL — ADVERTISE Workshop Postpones 'The Mikado ' Opening Directors Tom Turner and Ka- ren Hasselriis of the Sayville Mu- sical Workshop ' s production , \The Mikado. \ have decided to postpone the opening until the beginning of January to present the best possible show. Chorus rehearsals will start Monday, September 25 , at the Cherry Avenue Elementary School with Karen Hasselriis as vocal di- rector. They will continue once or twice a week through the Fall. Anyone interested is urged to at- tend these rehearsals. Auditions for the workshop ' s production of \The Marriage-Go- Round\ will begin Monday at the Workshop house on Candee Ave- nue. They will continue through September 28 , and also from Oct- ober 2 to 5. Hurricane Carla Hits Red Cross Disaster Funds According to A. T. An eany estimate indicates that over 3s , uu0 iamines suffered varying degrees oi loss. Two-nund- red-iorty National Red Cross dis- aster workers are now in the af- fected areas. Mobile canteen units are feeding families in the heavily damaged areas. At one time (i' 66 Ked Cross shelters were operating and housing over 204 , 000 victims. Many of tne snelters will have to remain open ior a period of at least 30 uays. 'this will mean that hundreds oi nurses and scores oi doctors will have to be constantly in attendance at these shelters. The Red Cross is supp lying snake-bite kits , emergency food rations , medical supplies , pure water , and dry ice lor families is- olated on the outer coastal fringes. The big task of rehabilitation and reestablishment of families and homes will be tremendous in scope and the Red Cross must and will assume this responsibility. The citizens of Suffolk County are well aware of the suffering and tremendous havoc that can be caused b y hurricanes.
