In the opening game September 20 , against Kings Park , the Porters were defeated, 0-4. Ba\ poit was handicapped e\ en befote the start of the game. Roel Gierasch , the goalie , had contracted scarlet fever and w ill now be out for an indefinite peiiod. Tony Canning, the- i ig ht halfback , was also ab- sent. Gere Carlson , a sop homore and usuall y a l eserve halfback , stai ted at the goalie position. Kings Park jumped into the lead m the second quarter when John Mark s kicked a two-pointer. Shortl y the-ieafter , Chuck Stroll , the Phantoms right-inside , evened the scen e at 2-2. Marks , however, again scoied just before the close of the second period leaving the score. 4-2 , at the half. Midway in flip thiul quarter . Kings Park' s Phil Phillips booted another goal. This was the extent of the scor- ing- until substitute Rick Hill tal- lies! for the Porters just prior to the final whistle. Thin selay. a powerful Mattituck team descended upon Bavport. The Tuckeis pounded out five goals while blanking the Phantoms. The* game was so lopsided that the Mattituc k goalie chalked up onl y e no sa\ e which pointed up Bay- port ' s excep tionall y weak offense. Gene Carlson again was pro- tecting the goal , but the deceptive TtH'kers pro\ ed too much for him. Jack Hi lmsteadt p layed a fine game at center halfback but this too was in vain. The Pollers lost in a heart- breaker Fridiv to the Bay Shore hooters . Both teams had been held scoreless until three minutes to go in the final quarter when Bay Shore scored on a penalty kick. Charlie Salata , usuall y Bay- port' s left halfback , p layed at the goalie position for this game while Gene Carlson took Sala- ta ' s p lace. Bayport' s defense in this game was outstanding with fullback How ie Reksten being the shining light. Howe\ er . once again the unco- oidinatid attack of Bayport' s line was made obvious. Lack of team- work and a dismal feeling is evi- dent. Ed Black , Bayport' s ri g ht wing* , summed it up when he stat- ed that , \We just lack sp irit. \ Black hinted that some changes in the line may be evidenced by the next game . It is to be hoped that goalie Rod Gierasch will return shortly. If so , it may be just the lift the team needs to get rolling.
