Spud Growers Delegation Plans March on Washington To Ask Assistance: A delegation of Suffolk farmers will journey to Washington during the coming weed, to ask immediate anel substantial government assis- tance for the loca l potato industry, now threatened with disaster by glut conditions and wholesale prices well below the cost of produc- tion. Growers atte tiding an emergen- cy meeting held in Riverhead la. >t Thursday night voted to request the U.S. Department of Agricul- ture to take positive action to strengthen the surplus-ridden mar- ket. Their case will be presented directly to Secretary ed \ Agricul tin e Orville Freeman if he wi ll I grant them a hearing, it was an- j noi.ne -od by W'lliam Nowaski, president of the L.I. Farmers In- stitute. Mr. Nowaski , a .Middle Island potato grower and piesiding offi- ce r at the 1 Regula ' s Corner nieet- , ing attended b y more than 200 ol \ bis fellow farmers , is expected to head the- capitol-bound mission. They will follow in the footstep- of a delegation of F. I. Farm Bureau members whose bid for govt rnment help was turned doyn o\er a month ago. Left undecided last Thursday night was the precise form the new request will take. P_arl y in the season , the Department of Agriculture undertook a limited in- stitutional purchase program in several Mid-Atlantic states with no visible ^ effect on the commer- cial market and very little bene- iit to producers. More recently , it announced a starch-flour-feed di- version program which is of bene- fit only te> those areas that have suitable processing facilities or large livestock herds. Long Island has neithe r. Looking to the future , the as- sembled growers also registered nearl y unanimous approval of pro- posed government-enforced regula- tory measures to ke ep acreage and production within what they con- sider reasonable bounds. The an- nounced tall y of a paper ballot vote was 156 in favor and six op- posed. This represents a major change in local grower thinking; in the past , majority opinion has been against the government tel- ling the grower how many acres he may plant and how many bush- els he may sell. An area-by-area and farm-by- farm marketing quota p lan has been proposed by potato growers of North Carolina and was taken up at a meeting of nine eastern states producers in Harrisburg, Pa., Tuesday. Other possible regu- latory measures may be ai red at that time, and a delegation of Long Island farmers will be there to hel p hammer out a program for presentation to the Depart- ment of Agriculture and ultimat- ely to Congress. Among those who will spea k for the local industry will be Nathan- iel A. Talmage , chairman of the Suffolk County Advisory Agricul- tural Comimission and National Potato Council director; Herbert Smith , president of the L.I. Agri- cultural Coordinating Committee; LIFI President Nowaski; John Neylow; Louis Demarest , Jay Hulse, Kenneth Tuthi'l and Cyril Wulforst. Congressman Otis G. Pike told the Suffolk growers at the Riv- erhead session that he will do all in his power to hel p them realize both their immediate and long- term goals. He emphasized , how- ever , that the ultimate solution li- es in acceptance of controls on a nationa l basis, and that such con- trols must apply not only to the number of acres planted but also to the number of bushels market- ed. American potato growers , he pointed out , have become too ef- ficient for their own good : They now habitually produce more po- tatoes from fewer acres. The gravity of the price situ- ation was stressed by Mr. Nowa- ski. Mr. Talmage , Leo Borkoski and other speakers. They said that with \table stock\ spuds re- turning $1 per 100 pounds to the farmer , while production-harvest- ing costs approximate $1. 60 or better , many growers face bank- ruptcy. This crisis has been brought about by a national pro- duction estimated at 2T8. 439 . 000 hundredweignts, the second largest crop on re cord . Overplanting in many areas, particularly in Idaho anel other western states , has re- sulted in an output well above both fresh market anel processing requirements. Long Island farmers , it was [j ointed out , planted within tho gove rnment-recommended acreage guides , and their production from some 44 , 000 acres , estimated by the Department of Agriculture at 11.320 , 000 hundredwei ghts and thought b y growers not to exceed 10 , 500 , 000 ' hundredweights , is sub- stantially under the ii I960 crop. Suffolk County Executive H. Lee Dennison offered the assis- tanie of hi. s office and the county Department of Commerce and In- dustry in promoting the sale and consumption of local potatoes he re on Long Island. He said ar- rangements will be made to pub- licize spuds em radio broadcasts and through other media. Several growers charged that many stores in the county give preferred dis- play space to potatoes brought in from other areas. Present at the meeting were : Supervisors William J. Leonard of Riverhead , Lester M. Albertson ot Southold , Stephen F. Me-cluiti ol Southampton , August Stout , Jr., of Brookhaven and William P. Bain of East Hampton. Kenneth Bullock director of commodity ser- vices for the New York State Farm Bureau , told how upstate apple anel cherry growers are en- deavoring to solve their problems by the use of state marketing or- ders and suggested this instru- ment might be utilized by potato growers.
