Laborer Killed Under Truck Wheels In Baiting Hollow A 33-year-old laborer was killed Monday afternoon in Baiting Hol- low when he fell under the rear wheels of a loaded potato truck. The victim is Clarence Mayo of Hubbard Avenue , Aquebague. Ri- \ erhead Police said Mr. Mayo sli p- ped on a gra\el-covered dnveway on the farm of Austin Warner , Ji., at Sound Avenue , Baiting Hol- low , and fell undei the lear right double-wheel of a loaded bulk potato truck. The wheels passed over tho low er part of Mayo ' s body. The truck driver , Allen G. Smith , of Osborne Avenue , Riverhead , stopped when he heard Mr. Mayo ' s scream. Mr Mayo was rushed to Cen- tral Suffolk Hospital , Riverhead , where he died on arrival. He was pronounced dead at 3 p. m. about 30 minutes after the accident. Police said Mr. Mayo had tried to stop Mr. Smith and was run- ning alongside the truck when he slipped and fell. Engaged couples , attent io n please ! The Van Guards team of the Patchogue Fire Department Avon the bucket brigade event b y six- tenths of a second to take the se- cond annual fh-emen ' s drill of the Medford Fire Department Sunday at Fireman ' s Park , Medford Sta- tion . The Patchogue team collected 21 points to nose out Center Mori- ches with 19 points. Blue Point had 15 1 /. points to place third in the competition. In the crucial bucket brigade event , Patchogue^ turned in a time of 36.4 seconds and Center Moriches registered a time of 37 seconds. Twenty-one fire departments partici pated in the drill and pa- rade. The first five place winners and their times are as follows: Three man ladder: Blue Point (Mighty Midgets), 7.2 seconds; Patchogue Van Guards (40 Thie- ves), 7.5; Cente r Moriches (Indi- ans), 7.7; Noithport (Mud Hens). 8.2 , and East Moriches (Play Boys), 8.3. Scharfenberger of Sayville pronounced the Wood- ards dead at 3:35 a. m. Saturday, according to police reports. In- vestigating the accident were Po- lice Lieut. Joseph Berni , Sg t. Warren Giubner and Patrolman F rank Zaccaro of the Third Pre- cinct. Forced off Highway In the Maguire accident , police said , an unidentified driver was reported to have swerved into the lane in which Mr. Maguire was driv ing and forced him to go off the east side of Route 112 and sttike a tiee. Police said Mr. Maguire was tiavelling noith on the hi ghway when the accident occurred near Mill Road at about 9:45 a. m. Fri- day. The accident was investi- gated b y Police Sg ts. Henry Giattan and Paul E\e and Ra- ti olman William Grant of the Sixth Piecinct. Mr . Maguire was a retired ship- ping clerk and a veteran of World War T. He had been a resi- dent of the Port Jefferson area for eight years. Surviving is a nephew , Robert Frank of Setau- ket. In his message , Mr. Dennison stated: \The county financial po- sition is sound and stable and will remain so , contrary to unfounded statements circulated throughout the county in past months. The indebtedness of the count y has not been increased beyond normal in- crement/' he said. \No ' unending spending ' pro- grams have been proposed which would increase the individual tax burden or the count y indebted- ness. No project has been propos- ed at all that was not urgently needed as a matter of the public health or to begin building a health y, balanced gener-al county economy, \ he said. He said that many phases of the budget l eflect changes in de- partment operations recommended earlier this >ear by a manage- ment consultant firm. Mr. Dennison cited as examples , the conversion of the old Suffolk Tuberculosis Sanitorium at Holts- ville to the Community College ; increase in probation sen ices to justice courts , expansion of men- tal health service to provide four full time clinics , and the purchase of park and conservation lands in Smithtown , Brookhaven , Hunting- ton , Southampton , East Hampton and Riverhead Townships. The Board of Supervisors will make its first formal discussion of the preliminary budget October 23 , and it is to be adopted No- vember 3 after a public hearing in Riverhead.
