Barry John L Barry, Republican can- didate lor re-eieciion as commis- sioner ol public welfax e, has de- voted 20 years to pub'ic service in numerous elective and appoin- ti\e civic and governmental po- sitions. During his first term in office , Welfare Commissionei Bany gained stature throug h his economic and dili gent adminis- tiation. He xvas recently elected vice-president of the New York State Welfare Association. In 1960 , Jack Barry ' s depart- ment finished the year with an unexpended balance of over $1 , 000 ,- 000 because oi his strict handling of funds. Immediately before becoming welfare commissioner , Mr. Barry xvas director of the Suffolk County Civil Defense Office. This depart- ment reached a high degree of efficiency under his direction. A native of Suffolk County, Mr. Barry graduated from Patchogue High School , attended New York University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Washington. A former zone chief and investi gator for the Suffolk Count y district attorney ' s office , he has comp leted special courses in administration , investigation , social welfare and mental health techni ques given by the Law En- forcement Officers Training School in conjunction with the FBI , State Association of Chiefs of Police and State Sheriffs Association. Married to the former Isabel T. Shiebler , and the father of four children , they reside at 85 Jayne Avenue , Patchogue. Mr. Barry enteied Federal Government serv- ice as an employe of the War Department in 1940. He became chief clerk of the utilities office , supervising personnel , procurement, operations , etc. He assisted in the organization of the fire depart- ment and other services now func- tioning under the administration of the Brookhaven National La- bel atory. Always active in civic and fra- ternal affairs , he is an active mem- ber of the New York State Assoc- iation of Fire Chiefs , Police As- sociation of Suffolk County, Brook- haven Town Fire Chiefs Council , Patchogue Lodge of Elks and a past member of the Patchogu e Kiwanis Club. He is also a past director of the N. Y. Chapter , FBI National Academy Associates; committee chairman , Region I, U. S. Civil Defense Council; member of the executive committee , Civil De- fense Directors Association of N. Y. State ; organizer and first president , Suffolk County Fire Chiefs Council; past secretary to the Suffolk County Volunteer Fire- men ' s Association ; life member , organizer and past president , Pat- chogue Fire Department Ambu- lance Company. Mr. Barry is also past secretary of the Patchogue Council , Knights of Columbus and past president of St. Francis de Sales Holy Name Society. Long active in Republi- can party affairs , he is past presi- dent and present director of the Lincoln Republican Club and mem- ber of the Suffolk County Repub- lican Committee. John P. CoiiUian , Jr. District Attorney Jonn P. Co- halan Ji., is the Kepuo ican can- didate for Suffolk County jud ge in the November 7 general elec- tion. This veteran officeholder has twice been elected district at- torney. He xvas previousl y Islip Town supervisor. A graduate of Manhattan Col- lege and Fordham University Law School , Mr . Cohalan has had a distinguished legal and public career. He became an assistant attor- ney general , New York State , in 1941. His first public position in Suffolk County was as a member of the Islip Town Planning Board in 1948. In 1950 he became attor- ney for the p lanning board. Three years later in 1953 he xvas chosen Islip Town attorney. The Repub- lican candidate for county judge became Islip Town supervisor in 1956. Shortl y afterwards , Mr Cohalan was elected Suffolk Coun- ty district attorney for the first time. In 1959 he ran again and was overwhelmingl y re-elected Under his direction the district attorney ' s office has handled a record number of cases. Mr. Cohalan is a resident of Sunset Drive , Sayville , with his wife and two children. He is a member of the Sayville Rotary Club , the Kni g hts of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. The present district attorney be- ' ongs to the New York State Bar Association and the Suffolk County Bar Association. The Republican candidate foi county jud ge is the son of John P. Cohalan a former assemblyman state senator , surrogate and offi- cial referee of the Supreme Court. C hester F. Jacobs Chester F.
