Town Holds Decision On Law to Restrict Parking in F' mingville The Brookhaven Town Board Tuesday reserved decision on a pro- posed ordinance to limit parking near the new post office in Farm- ingville until postal authorities car be consulte d by members of the board. The proposed ordinance stipulat- ed that parking would be prohibited on the south side of Horseblock Road , for a distance of 125 feet east of Woodycrest Drive , longer than 15 minutes , and parking would be pro- hibited on the east side of Wood y- crest Drive for a distance of a 135 feet south of Horseblock Road , longer than \ -15 minutes. The ordinance was requested by Mrs. Henry Bahnmuller , postmast- ei of the Farmingville post office , which was moved into a new build- ing last month at the intersection oi Horseblock Road and Woody- crest Drive. At the public hearing on the or- dinance , Mr. Bahnmuller asked that the proposed parking prohibition on the east side of Woodycrest Drive be deleted from the ordin- ance. Mrs. Bahnmuller, who was with him at the hearing, did not speak on the ordinance. John Stiffel of Sunny Road , St. James , and proprietor of the Coun- try Tavern on Farm-to-Market Road , Farmingville , opposed the ordinance as advertised on the grounds that it would provide a hardship to local businesses and that parking prohibition was not necessary because parking space is provided at the rear of the post office. Mr. Stiffel asked the town board to contact postal officials to deteimme if the post office needs extra parking. Also opposing the proposed or- dinance were Thomas Lombino of Farmingville; Mrs. Charles Cohen , wife oi the proprietor of Rudco Drugs , Inc. on Farm - to - Market Road , Farmingville , and Erich Dal- Imer oi HoltbVille , all of whom con- tended the proposed parking pro- hibition is not necessary. Zoning Changes Approved by the board was a zoning change from C lesidential to J-2 business for property on tho south side of Route 25A , across fiom Adams Avenue , in Rocky Point. The app licants , Mr. and Mis. Step hen Piazza of Flushing intend to use the pioperty for auto and tire repair work. The boaid also appro* .ed a zon- ing change fiom D to C residential foi appioximately 135 acres in School District 5 (Bayport-Blue Point , on the application of the dis- trict s Board of Education. Council- man John Foley abstained from voting since he is a member of the school board. Appro* .al was also given by the board for a zoning change from B lesidential to J-2 business for pro- perty behind the Port Jefferson Plaza Shopping Center and on Ter- ryville Road on the application of Port Jefferson Station Properties , Inc. Changes Denied The boaid denied zoning changes on the application of Bernard Kap- lan of Smithtown for a zoning change fiom C residential to J-2 business for property on Market Sti eet , Centereach , with the intent of making property available for a U. S. Post Ofiice ; the application of Salle and Sarah La Corte of Art- hur Avenue , Brookhaven hamlet , for a zoning change from B resi- dential to L-l industrial for pro- perty bounded by the Long Island Rail Road and Arthur Avenue; and the application of George Handley of Oakdale for a zoning change from C residential to J-2 business for property on Station Road and Brookhaven Avenue , North Bellport , with the intent to use the site for a gasoline station. Council John Young abstained from voting on the Handley application. Also approved by the board was a zoning change from B resi- dential to J-2 business for propert y at Barnum Avenue and Main Street , Port Jefferson , on the condition that a covenant is fulfill- ed by the applicants , Samuel and Helen Giles. The covenant requires that no gas or service station be constructed on the site , that a 15- foot buffer zone be maintained on all sides of the property except the Barnum Avenue frontage, and that all vehicles stored on the property must be able to move of their own power. This organization has worked with complete accord with the department and the old timers (there are four , I believe) tell me that they actuall y pitched in and helped fight fire s in the old days. Those days are gone now , however , as there is ample man pow er , and also the fire commissioners have ruled that only firemen can fi ght fires. Now the principal chores of the ladies are raising money and pre- paring food while the men are fighting a fire. These ladies must drop everything and come quickly when called upon to prepare food as there is much to be done and it has to be done quickly, and let me add , it is. The food the ladies prepare is brought to the scene of the fire by a member of our Fire Police, another unit of our department. There have been no fires for the past week making the second straight week without a fire. The department has received the following, which is called Small equipment: Two (2) mine safety smoke masks (canister type); sev- eral pairs of boots ; a small folding ladder for use inside a building; and also boot inserts for our boots. Inserts protect the men ' s feet , from nails or sharp metal when walk- ing at the scene of fires. The department has acquired a 20x60 foot chicken coop and soon it will be moved to our park ac- ross from the firehouse — this will be used mostl y to store equipment when not in use (tab- les and benches — etc.) This has been sorely needed for a long time. I hope you folks liked the lad - der picture published last week. This picture was taken by Don Mistier and processed by Charles Schmitz and I wish to thank them. Mr. Schmitz is not a mem- ber of our department but volun- teered to give us the fast service necessary to get the picture to the Long Island Advance on time. (He also delivered the picture to them.) On behalf of the department , I wish to thank the Veterans of Foreign Wars ' Ambulance Club for letting their ambulance stand b y all afternoon at our tourna- ment. Our Chief , Jack Condon , is back on crutches again for awhile. It seems the broken bone has not healed enough to support his weight. For your best source of infor- m ation locall y, read The Advance each week. — Adv.
