Tuesday the men of the department met for fire school . All the pabiting on the firehouse has been comph ted. Chief Davis would like to remind aH the residents of the area that Winter is upon us and everyone should take the time and tro ' uble to have his heatiing system checked and cleaned. This is one of tbe most common causes of bouse fire. - , during the Winter months. HALLOWEEN DANCE The annual Halloween dance held at Hie firehouse Saturday night was another successful af- fair. The firehouse looked nothing like a firohou-o w hen the nun of the committee got through decora- ting it. Stalks of corn and colorful leaves lined the walls and from the rafters apples , crepe paper and balloons all but covered the ceil- ing. Costumes were the highlig ht pf the evening and there were hiany novel ideas displayed by the people in their costumes. A contest was held and first prize was awar- ded to Air. Herbert Davis , wife of the Fire Chief , who came dressed as Miss Rheinaold covered with paper napkins and empt y beer can'* . Second prize was awarded to Ray Ililler of Bellport Road who was dressed as a minstrel '' showman. Third prize was won by Fire Commissioner Werner Klein of Afj ll Road who was a scarecrow complete with wooden arms and a sack covering his face and feet and stuffed with hay. During the judging of the costumes several young boys dressed as pall bearers complete with a wooden coffin made a dramatic entrance and placed the box in the center of the ball. When the lid was opened , a live corpse sat up and asked the audience for help. Honorable men- tion must be made of the costume worn b y John Hoeffner who came as a ballerina. A basket of cheer was awarded to Ray Hiller and Herbert Faust was awarded a cuckoo clock. Airs. Betty Zittel won a prize for being the only contestant left in a balloon dance. .Music was supplied by the Chords- men until 2:45 a. m. Walter Schlictkeroll and Bill Sheridan. SCOUT NEWS, Troop 75 of the Girl Scouts held its meeting October 18 and had as its guest speaker , Airs. Martin Fried, Intermediate Troop consul- tant, who addressed the troop and the girls ' mothers. The top ic of discussion was about the badges and ranks and also the part that the mother p lays in helping her daughter in the program of Scout- ing. The meeting was attended by a group of 14 girls. Sheriff Charles Dominy, Superin- tendant of Highways Charles Bar- raud and Justice of the Peace Leon E. Giuffreda were among the group who attended the affair. Sheriff Dominy spoke briefly on the subject of our growing town- ship and just what it will mean to us taxwise in the future. He also pointed out the problems in our town and how necessary it is for us to retain home rule. The group held a question and answer period and during this time Air. Barraud spoke on the subject of snow re- moval and just how comple x a problem it is and will continue to be. Air. Giuffreda spoke on the treatment of juvenile offenders, particularly first offenders. He pointed out that if the office of the Justice of the Peace were done away with as ha. - been suggested these youthful offenders would not be given the opportunity for an- other chance as they have now , be- fore being marked for life by hav- ing been charged with a crime.
