In competition at Walt Wh't- man High School in Huntington , Starr took first p lace in fancy and military strutting, one and two ! baton , both in New York State and open solo competition. She was also named grand champion of the day. On October 21 , Starr competed in the East Meets West Baton Twirling contest held at Altoona. Pa., and won first place in her age division , first p lace in strut- ting, first place in two baton and then went on to win the champ ion of the day trophy. This contest was under the supervision of Mearle E. Diles of Endicott well- known judge of national contests.
