MEDFORD Mrs. Martha Theis. GRover 5-3559 V. F. W. AUX. The Ladies ' Auxiliary of Henry J. Jones Post 29:17 , Veterans of Foreign Wars , met at the Veterans Hall last Thursday night. The an- nual inspection of the auxiliary wa.s made by Mrs. Lorraine Goonan , past county president , and current guard in District 1. Mrs. Evel yn Zuchowski , Suffolk County Council Auxiliary president , made her official visit. Seven new members , initiated in the auxiliary, were Mesdames Jack Finger , James Masem , Harry Meyers , Giacone Maltese . John Maran , John O'Connor and Joan Petrun. Mrs . Carl Wingard , Mrs. Henry Hewett and Mrs. Gertrude Bar- teau , attended the indoctrination of volunteers classes at North- port Hosp ital , October 19. A Hal- loween dance and carnival is be- ing sponsored tor the patients at North port Veterans Hospital , to- day and tonight. Several me.ntiers p lan to serve at the affair. It was report\d that Mrs. Marguerite Schaller of Huntington , Veterans Administration Volunteer Services chairman , had broken her ankle and Mrs. Gertrude Barteau of the Medford Auxiliary will take her p lace while she is laid up. Granddaughters of veterans who served overseas are now eligible to become members of the VFW Auxiliary. On November 8 at the monthly dance at Northport Hospital a special program and massing of the colors , in recognition of Vet- erans ' day, will take place. A testimonial dinner honoring Past. Countv Commander Bruce Barteau will be held at the Elk' s Club , Patchogue , November 25. The next meeting of the auxil- iary was cancelled as it would fall on Thanksgiving day. A li g ht supper and social hour followed the meeting. 4-H CLUB The annual Westend Achieve- ment Ni g ht of the Suffolk Count y 4-H Clubs was held at the Smith- town Junior Hi g*h School , Fri- day night . Members of the Med- ford Girl' s 4-H Club who attended included Judy Alver , Carol and Sarafina Bongo , Lynn King, Judy and Diane Lento , Jane Ann Masem , Linda Hahn , Patricia Saudo , Betty Ann Rotermund , Sharon Vaug han , Patricia Wagner. They were ac- companied by their leaders , Mrs. E. A. Theis and Mrs. W. D. Warner , and parents , Mrs. Josep h Lento , Mrs. Thomas Vaug han , Mrs. Albert King, Mrs. Inge Alver and Charles Bongo. For comp leting all projects and entering all activities the Medford Club received a special award and the Achievement seal of comple- tion. Individual special awards for having participated in demon- strations , clothing revues , sum- mer fair and other extra activities were given to Carole and Sarafina Bongo , Patricia Wagner , Lois and Patricia Ward. All 30 members in the club re- ceived their certificates of com- pletion and bronze p ins , accord- ing to the years in club work. Fifth-year girls who received silver pins were Judy Alver , Judy Lento , Patricia Saudo and Betty Ann Rotermund. Girls receiving six year pins were Lynn King and Sharon Vaug han. Nancy Warner , was the only girl receiving a gold , ten-year p in. It was given to her mother in her absence , since she is now attending Wagner College. Bett y Ann Rotermund , secretary for the past year , received a handsome gold clover paperweight as a reward for being a blue rib- bon secretary. On Saturday, the second group completed their stuffed toy animal project. There will be no meeting Sat- urday or November 11. The last class in stuffed toys will be held from 10 a. m . to 3 p. m. November 18. HOME EXTENSION UNIT The Medford Unit of the Suf- folk County Extension Service met at the home of Mrs. E .A. Theis last Wednesday afternoon. The braided rug project and other handwork classes are being con- tinued. Mrs. Ray Oehler , who with Mr. Oehler , spent three weeks in Florida , returned over the week- end. Another member , Mrs. Arthur Hofmann , and her husband , spent some time in Maryland , and re- turned home over the weekend. After the meeting, refreshments were served with Mrs. Ernest Reeves , hostess. * * * The Medford Taxpayer s and Civic Association will meet at the Tremont Avenue school Mon- day night. A board meeting of the South Suffolk Council , Girl Scouts of America , will take p lace at the Tremont Avenue school tonig ht. A mothers meeting, was held at the home of Mrs. Ray Francis on Cedar Avenue last Thursday Night. On Saturday afternoon Troop 45 hiked to the Circle M Dairy farm on Route 112 with their leaders. A surprise party was given for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Vaughan of Jamaica Avenue Saturday night at the 112 Lounge , in celebration of their fifteenth wedding- anniver- sary. Mr. and Mrs. Ferde Mistier and daughter , Joann , of Ohio Avenue , drove to Scotia where they visited with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mistier and famil y. On October 21 , the members and fri2nds of the Workmen ' s Sick and Death Benefi t societ y and the Medford Mens ' and Ladies Choral Societies made their annual pil- grimage to the Home for the Aged at Cotterkill , stay ing over the weekend. About 47 went by bus and about 45 went by private cars. Other groups , from various areas , joined them , in this vast get-to-gether , numbering several hundred people. MARK'S CHURCH Services at St. Mark' s Episcopal Church includes Holy Communion at 10 a. m. Sunday, followed b y church school at 10:15 a. m. The Rev. Donald C. Latham of Stony Brook is priest-in-charge. The annual fall smorgasbord supper will be held at the Veterans Hall fro m 6 to 8 p. m., Saturday, for the benefi t of the church and the Women ' s Guild. There will also be a fancy goods and white ele- phant sale and grab-bag for the children. ST. SYLVESTER'S CHURCH Masses at St. Sylvester ' s R. C. Church are held at 7:30 , 0 , 11 a. m. and 12 noon , Sunday. Weekday masses are at 8 a. ni. daily. Con- fessions are heard at 4-5 and 7:150- 8 p. m. Saturdays. Baptisms are held at 1:30 Sunday. Confraternit y classes for junior and senior high school students are held at 7:30 p. m. Thursday. Religious instructions are g iven to the children in the elementary grades Sunday morning following the 9 a. m. mass. Concert Group ' s First Ev ent Nov . 30 The 1961-62 Brookhaven Com- munity Concert Association sea- son will commence November )J0 with the appearance of the Nether- lands Chamber Orchestr a , conduct- ed by Szymon Goldberg. On February 18 , the lovely young coloratura soprano , Laurel Hurley, will appear in concert. The Gilbert and Sullivan Con- cert hall will be presented March 15. It features tenor , John Carter; soprano, Sharlie Shull; mezzo , Ruth Ray; and baritone , Donald Johnston * in beautifull y costumed vignettes of the favorite operettas , comp lete with solos , duets and ensemble with dialogue and stage action. All three concerts will take place at Patchogu e Senior High School on Saxton Street , Patch- ogue. Association membership cards are being mai' ed to members to act as a reminder of the first con- cert.
