Patchogue finished its season this w eek in a l n agae game w th Smithtow n at Snvthtown. Patchogue has had an unlucky league l ecoi d this \ ear with only one win against ten losses . The Ba* , Shore game resembled eaihei games of the season. Thiee ¦vai sny p la* ,ei s misled the game because of pi ev-ous commitments and other leasons . There were four or fne junio r varsity men p laying dunng the cour-e of the game. Two bo\ s . Bayport Completes Soccer Season With 3-7 Record By Jim Skelly The varsity soccer team of Bay- poit High ended the season on the light note last week. After a loss to Southold Monday, the Phan- toms came back and defeated both Patchogue and Bellport. It took the Porters somewhat o\ er an hour last Monday to travel to Southold wheic, in the midst of a violent downpour , the Bayport booters dropped one to the South- oldei s , 4-1. The sky had been overcast all day and finall y let loose in a tor- rent midway in the second period. Both the opening and second quar- ters had been uneventful for both teams. The five minutes allowed between the first and second half were eliminated due to the grow- ing darkness and the continuing heavy lainfall. The third and fom th peiiods also were shoitened from the usual 12 minutes to eight. It was midway in the third quarter that Southold managed to slip its fiist goal by Bayport goalie Rod Gicrasch. The Phantoms scored just after the commencement of the final peiiod. Rick Mm gatroyd . a Bay- poit fullback with a great foot , powered a penalty kick into the Southold goal. Southold then cams right back and tallied their second and final goal of the game. The visibilit y was so poor due to the rain and daikness that some of the Phantoms did not know that Southold had scored its second goal. Tho Portei s ' Jack Meyer commented '\Tt took me four min- u s es befoie I realized they (Southold) had scored. \ A dav later the Phantoms thoroughly clobber ed the Red Raidei s of Patchogue in a 12-1 romp Coach Bob Luff tw o-pla toonc d his men and also came up w ith some no\ el line-ups in Bay- port ' s easiest victoiy of the sea- son. Freshman T o m m y Roecklem brought up from the junior var- sity especially for this game , scor- ed the first goal of the contest in the opening peiiod fi om the rig ht wing po rtion. Roecklcin was very effective and may be capable of lising to great hei g hts in the yeai s to come. Jack Meyer made the score 4-0 for Bavpoit in tho second period. Tony Canning, right halfback for the Phantoms , booted the ball a good 50 yards downfield to the Iett wing (Meyer ) who prompt- ly slammed the ball into the Pat- chogue goal. Seven minutes after Meyer tallied , Jimmy McCarthy, on an assist from Richie Sasz , scored Bayport' s third goal of the dav. The Red Raiders held the Port- ers scoreless in the third quarter as Coach Luff began to manipul- ate his versatile Phantoms. Such no\ ol sights as goalie Rod Gier- asch play ing right wing, half- backs Chailie Salata and Tony Canning on the line , and fullback Eldon Routh tryin g his hand at goalie , were all to be enjoyed , but not the. Red Raiders. In the final period , these weird combinations reall y let loose. After having some near misses , Charlie Salata, appearing to have a grand time p lay ing center forward , bang- ed one into thc Patchogue goal with eight minutes to g*o in the game. Senior Justin Scott , reserve lineman , scored four minutes later and biought the score to 10-0. Bill Dm land finished up an eventful dav for the Phantoms when he added another goal just prior to the games finish. The Red Raiders scored their only counter of the day when , with 10 seconds remaining in the game , center-half Ray Hansen booted a penalt y kick. The Phantoms finished the sea- son in a contest with Bellport on the Poiter ' s home field. Bell port tallied in the second ppriod and had the Blue and Gold momen- tarily sl unned. A freakish goal turned the tables against Bellport when one of their fullbacks kicked a goal for which Jack Meyer of Bayport was given credit. The Phantoms momentum continued as Rick Hill tallied. This made the score 4-2 at the half. In the third quarter , Bavport center forward Eddie Black boot- ed a ball which hit off a Bell- nort fullback' s hands and travel- led into the Bellport goal . It ap- peared to be intentional use of hands , in which case , Bayport would be credited with two points. How r ever , the referee claimed that had the fullback not used his hands , the ball would not have gone into the goal but instead ha\ e hit the top of the goal post. Therefore , a penalty kick was called for. Rick Murgatroyd did the honors for Bayport and boot- ed a beauty off the goal post that skimmed into the nets. Bellport tallied in the fourth quarter. This was not enough and the Phantoms were the victors , 5-4 . Bayport terminated a season which had not been overly pro- ductive. The Porters compiled an overall record of seven wins and nine losses. They were 3 and 7 in league play. Eddie Black was high scorer in the season for the team with 11 points. Playing their last games for Baypoit were Ed Black , Tony Canning, Charlie Salata , Rod Gier- asch , Jimmy McCarthy, Jack Meyer , Benny Kenney, Richie Duffy, Rick Murgatroy d , Justin Scott and Richie Sasz. L Ducks , hotter than the unseasonable 70 degree temperature Sunday night , walloped the league-leading Clinton Comets , 7-1 , to gain a weekend sp lit in a home series. The Ducks lost a tough one Saturday night at the upstate arena by a 4-2 score. Leading 2-1 , with just six minutes to go in the game , the Ducks had two Comet goals scored against them from two consecutive face-offs to put the winners ahead to stay. A bri ght , if repetitious note , was Barry Ho- gan ' s scoring the two Duck goals. This boy has got to go—up ! Sunday night was a different proposition for the suddenl y su- percharged Long Islanders. About 2 , 000 fans had bare l y settled in their seats when Sam Gregory picked up a loose puck in a melee at the Comet net and fli pped it in at the 3:53 mark of the first period. This tall y set the tone for the whole evening. Passing sharp- l y and accuratel y, maintaining an almost impregnable defense , the Ducks outskated the Comets so decisivel y in the opening period that goalie Gilles Villemure was called upon to make onl y one save in 16 minutes of p lay. He wound up with nine saves alto- gether. Comet goalie Norm De- Felice was twice as busy with thc Ducks aiming the puck at him 17 times. The winning goal was scored by Marcel Rochon at 17:26 of the first period. The Ducks found the i*est of the game downhill as Ro- chon had another goal in the last period to match Claude Vimet' s double tally. Don Atamanchuk and Barry Hogan comp leted the rout with sing le goals. Dusk Tracks — Hogan ' s goal was his 11th in 10 games to lead v the team in scoring . . . 1st period was haid fought but clean as ses- sion went by without a penalty ... At the 10 minute mark of second j:>eriod Norm Ryder and Ted Szydlowski got involved in a bit of fist-swinging and both were sent off with five and 10 minute penalties to break the serenit y of the action . . . Ducks left Mon- day on Southern swing which will include stops at Greensboro , Charlotte , Knoxville and Johns- tow n . . . Clinton l eturns to the L. I. The League III meet was won by Riverhead with 19 points. The Clip- pers finished second with 89. Fourth went to Islip with 134. fifth to Hauppauge with 135 , sixth to Half Hollow Hills with 148 and seventh to East Islip with 167. Harborfields broug ht up the rear with 189. Also for the Clippers , Bruce McDougal took 26th , Larry Beislin 31st , Cliff Cummings 32nd , Harry Brame 33rd , and Vic Reusch 37th. ,
