Listen Veteran New York State Division of Veterans ' Affairs CIVIL SERVICE: Applications will be accepted up to Monday for the title of senior building structural engineer under the New York State Civil Service. A com- petitive examination for this po- sition is scheduled for December 10. Opportunities for case work- ers exist in Westchester County. The examinations are scheduled for December 2 , for senior social case worker (PA ) and senior so- cial case worker (CW B New York State residence is not required for these positions. LEGISLATION: Two groups of bills introduced in the fiist ses- sion of the ei g hty-second Cong- ress of major importance to area veterans were not acted upon by the Congress before its recent adjournment. The first batch of bills concerned increasing com- pensation for veterans with ser- vice-connected disabilities. None of the bills introduced to increase compensation were passed b y the Congress. The second group of bills pertain to GI life insurance policies and included measure^ which would permit conversion of National Service Life Insurance term policies to lower cost per- menent policies than now exist, and bills which would permit a period during which an opportu- ity to purchase NSLI would be reopened for those veterans w hose GI insurance has lapsed. These bills , however , will be carried over into the second session of tbe eighty-second Congress which convenes January 10, 1902. BENEFITS : A new brochure entitled \Benefits for Survivors of Veterans and Members of the Armed Forces \ , has been publish- ed by the New York State Di- vision of Vetei ans ' Affairs. This new publication contains in sum- maiy from information on the various Federal and New York State benefits for which the sur- vivors of servicemen or veterans may be eligible. This new bro- chure may be obtained -without charge from any New York State Dhision of Veterans ' Affairs counseling office or Veterans Ser- vice Agency. STATE FAIR: All requests for counseling service made by visi- tors at tbe New York State Di- vision of Veterans ' Affairs exhi- bit at the 1901 State Fair at Syracuse have been distributed b y the Division headquarters at Albany to state veteran counse- lors servicing the area of the ad- dresses given by visitors. Due to the magnitude of the requests some of them may have been lost oi misdirected.
