He thinks no incorrect thoug hts , his politics are innocu- ous , he is never interesting, is no trouble and will probably do noth- ing for America. \College professors , \ said Dr. Taylor , \ spend too much time on committees , group research , as con- sultants to business or the mili- tary and too little time caring what happens in intellectual affairs. \Americans have too great a con- cern for the ' average ' person , \ he said. \Education should not only seek out the talented and intellec- tually well-off , but should liberate not train; should teach use of the intellect for itself , not for a com- mercial purpose. We raise stand- ards , but for the wrong rea- sons. We seek only the talent with- in , not the ways to effect the re- lease of this talent and the energy within , training it to action. \In American education we must cease organizing the students in large masses. We must restore the teacher in relation to the stu - dents , because the quality of edu- cation cacn only be as good as the quality of the teacher , and the stu- dent can only learn when he has a chance to work with teachei s who are concerned with w r hat he will become . \There is a need for experimen- tal outposts , such as we find here at Adelphi in Suffolk , outposts where this kind of education is possible , \ Dr. Taylor concluded. • - s'z'z z'vz'z z' -z'z r i Cf'^' c^^' s^'t^'S'gc^^^^^ s^^^^ t^ 1 /ft! !f r— ~_^_ ^ f 7 \ ¦ . /S !/ / \ ~~\— —¦» _ #5 i / $sO; c^ ^^^/ - ~? «8&5^ 4T\ I I p®* \ \\^^ S^^ ^^ W ! | T^^^^v?^^^^* / ' ! .j * jfys^^ /f tmmw f (BBmxBwf _ vB^ c ^^^iw W\ *** M» j ft _ t _\ * \ * _ ^r ^ jjs i ^^l^K\ -d; v ^\ yjUW><X BE SURF I ^ ^^^ffiw^PU^^ f YOU GET J y I sr & * I s? « Join Our Christmas Club Now ! Senior Buyer Nunnenkamp Out RIVERHEAD — Herbert A. Nunnenkamp of Copiague , a sen- IOI buyer with the county pur- chasing department , and the sub- net of a lecent investigation by the Suffolk District Attorney ' s oifice , ha- s resigned his position , it was announced this week. Count y Executive H. Lee Den- iiiton , m a length y report to the Board of Supervisors , discussed the investigation made by District At- torney John P. Cohadn , Ji., told of the results of his own follow - up probe , and stated that \ steps have been taken to discontinue his (Mr. Nunnenkamp s) service. \ Lat- ci , Mi. Dennison told newsmen that Mr. Nunnenkamp had resign- ed. A month ago , after a lengthy investigation Mr. Cohalan , in a re- port to Mi. Dennison and the Board of Supeivisors , said there was laxity in the Civil Service Commission in regard to conduct ing examinations for positions in the county purchasing department. Mr. Nunnenkamp, an unsuccess- ful candidate on the Democratic ticket for Babylon Town tax re- ceiver , had refused to give a state- ment to detectives , detectives said , and finally was sub poenaed to testify before the grand jury af- ter signing a waiver of immunity. Mr. Cohalan said his probe un- covered the Civil Seivice Commis- sion was lax in conducting inves- tigation of the background of people filing applications for posi- tions. He further contended the commission was making decisions and holding meetings by telephone. He said the chief examiner and secretary of the commission , Da- vid Zaron , could be criticized as using the three commissioners like rubber stamps. Mr. Dennison ' s report said he found no illegal or criminal ac- tion , and that there was nothing wrong with the \legal , propel , and in accoi dance with common pi actice for such matters , including the investigation of application da- ta , decisions of the commission by telephone. \ Mr. Dennison said that he is studying ways and means of pro- viding for more complete investi- gation of applications for Civil Service positions. He lauded the Civil Service Com- mission for \ accomp lishing an ex- cellent structure for professional civil service piocedures , which hao and will continue to benefit the county. \ Mr. Cohalan , noting Mr. Den- nison ' s report to the board , said he was generall y satisified with the action Mr. Dennison had taken. \My repoi t contained nothing but the absolute truth based on doc- uments obtained from the Civil Service files and the testimony g iven by county employes. \However , \ Mr. Cohalan added , \I still do not believe that im- portant decisions by an executive body of county government should be made o\ er the telephone. \ 850 MONTH BUYS FAMILY-PLAN-LIFE DAD , age 30 :: MOM , age 26 $5 , 000 - - - DAD $1 , 365 - - - MOM All New Additions from 15 days-6 mos., $2. \50.00 ALL THE CHILDREN From 6 Months-22 Years $1 , 000.00 Also Double Indemnity • Cash Values • Waiver of Premium • AND LOTS MORE Send for Brochure | CALL !
