Food Retailers Are Asked To Give Potatoes Boost Food retailers throughout the northeast have been asked by Commissioner Don J. Wickham of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to feature Long Island and upstate pota- toes during the Winter marketing season . Other vigorous promotional efforts desi gned to hel p growers move a bumper crop of high-qualit y spuds has been initiated by the department in cooperation with the State Department of Commerce and the L. I. Agricultural Coor- dinating Committee. As a service to Empire State agriculture , news media throug h- out the state have been request- ed b y Mr. Wickham to alert con- sumers to the availabilit y of po- tatoes as an outstanding food buy. In his message to some 170 large and small food chains , and independents , the Commissioner pointed out that potato farmers have comp leted the harvest of an excellent and overl y abundant crop. \They face a serious eco- nomic problem , \ he stated , in urg- ing the retailers \to lend a help- ing hand\ b y \ playing-up \ spuds in their advertising and in-store disp lays . Special potato publicity packets have been distributed among all television and radio stations in the state. Forty-two farm program di- rectors received one-minute radio tapes carry ing a message to con- sumers from Air . Wickham. This stresses the importance of pota- toes as a high-energy and low- budget food , and one that can be prepared in many different ways. \Healthwise , the potato adds up to marvelous food value , and for variety it stands alone—there are some 657 recipes for potatoes , \ the message states in part. The agricultural department also has invited 15 leading food adver- tising agencies and a number of food company publicists to tie-in potatoes in advertising with their regular food accounts. The hard-hitting campai gn is be- ing carried out by the depart- ment' s farm pi'oducts promotion section under the direction of John L. Alatheson , assistant director of the division of markets. Mr. Mathe- son directed the hig hlv successful \Potato Week\ program in 1960. Initial results of the current ef- fort are very promising, according to Mr. Matheson. In a repoi't to growers , he said \ preliminary re- sponses from retailers show their awareness of the seriousness of the situation and their willingness to extend full cooperation. \ Moriches Mrs. Ann Bnrjce , Tel .
