Beach Ra bbi Extends Holiday Greetings to All MASTI C BEACH—Rabbi Allen Block , recentl y-installed spiritual icader of the Mastic Beach He- iuew Center on Neighborhood Road , has extended holiday wishes to local residents in an open lettei w hich icads as follows : \December is a joyous month for it ushers in two beautiful hol- idays—Chanukah and Christmas. Both are occasions of joy and gift- giving, light and love. To those of the Jewish faith Chanukah marks the first time in history that men fought for religious lib- erty. To those of Christian belief the Nativity heralds a new episode in man ' s approach to God. \There are many similarities be- tween these two Festivals which make them partners in the great drama of religious thoug ht. Both have as part of their tradition the lig hting of candles , the exchange of gifts , the singing of songs , and expressions of rejoicing. They both speak of miracles. For Chanukah it is the victory of the ri g hteous few over the armies of tyrants , and of a cruse of oil which burned miraculously for eight days while it was to last but one day. For Christmas it is the birth of the Babe in th ¦ Manger amid signs pioclaiming the advent of one who will teach the meaning* of love. \Both Festivals emp hasized red- edication. For Chanukah it is of a people returning* to its God. For Christmas it is the individual pledging himself to a religious way of life. \Chanukah is the 25 L h day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. And Christmas occurs on the 25th day of December. \In truth , these two Festivals bear one message: In the words of Zachariash , \Not by might , nor b y power , but by My spa it , Saith the Lord ; \ In the w ords of the Gospel , \ Peace on Earth , Good Will to Men. \ \May I wish all my friends a Happy Chanukah and a Merry Christmas. \ Rabbi A.
