This is an excellent idea, and we make sure that the office of the county ex- ecutive is always included in the student itine rary. We try to explain to the groups the workings of both town and county governments , hoping to get across to these young people their importance as future citizens in town and county. We try to arouse their curiosity about what govern- ment is , and why it exists , and 1 wha t it is supposed to be doing for them. We invite questions from them , hop ng they become int^ v-c- ed enough to wonder and think a little hit about it. Generally, when the student groups tioop into the office , they are much interested in government as such. Since they are captive audience , howe\er , we like to think they go out with some gain , re- taining at least something about what goes on in government. The unfortunate part of the si- tuation is that , too many of the parents of these young peop le , all too often , have \ ery little more knowledge about government than their offspring. This is what we have been talking aboet so much. in past months — public apathy about public affairs. We expect to do something about it , and hope to maeh. every citizen of the co ir.ty, including all the students of all ages , to tell them the story of cur local government. The aid and support of those who have talked so loudl y about local home mle these past years is hereby invited. If it ' s news — you 'll find it ill The Advance. —Adv. County Exec Speaks
