'Creative Minority ' Necessary to Meet America ' s Challenges Dr. Marshall E. Dimock Sunday called for a \ creative minority \ to meet today ' s challenges in the American society. The head of the All-University Department of Government at New York University spoke at an adult meeting of the Brookhaven Unitarian Fellowship in the Pat- chogue YMCA building. The ftle of his address was \The Chal- lenge to American Institutions. \ Three challenges , he said , were 1) To improve the nation ' s values and morality; 2) To stregthen our governing and economic insti- tutions, and 3) To explore univer- sal principles found in all institu- tions. Dr. Dimock , who was elected moderator in May of the Unitar- ian-Universalist Association , fol- lowing the formal merger of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalis Church of America , was introduced by Ed- ward Pearson , chairman of the Brookhaven fellowship. Samuel Ristich led the congre- gation in a \Common Prayer , \ in which he asked those present to \ come to this p lace to worship in spirit and in truth ; that is , intel- ligently, rationall y, with clear judgment , not prostrating your understandings , not renouncing the divine gift of reason ... \ Toynbee s Thesis The professor built his talk around the thesis of the historian, Arnold Toynbee. Dr. Toynbee ' .s position in his multi-volume work , \The Study of History, \ was that every society has a challenge and response. The survival of each so- ciety through the centuries of his- tory has depended , Dr. Dimock said , upon the response of a \ cre - ative minority, \ which provide-, leadership based upon a snarpened sense of responsibility. Dr. Dimock , who has a long rec- ord of public service and paitici- pation in liberal church ait^iis , expressed the belief that the Uni- tarian-Universalist Association in- cluded the type of person * who could contribute to that leadershi p \because they have tho righ„ re- lationship between intelli gence and values and thought and feeling. ' As a student an I professor of government , Dr. Dimick said that he had studied bur'Mticracy in government and industrial institu - tions. He urged chat the \ creative leadership, \ which Iv sough t , com- bine the organization noces-ai y * o a smooth - running bumaucracy with \ enterprise , \ as o.pic- ' -sc' d by the imaginative , explora t ory mind. At the meeting Mr. and Mrs. Ris- tich were the greeters. The hosts were Mrs. Grace Cohen and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Tritsch. Here comes the bride!
