At Holiday Pitch MASTIC BEACH—Members of the Ladies Aid Society of the Grace Lutheran Church met in the Sun- day School last Wednesday even- ing for their annual Christmas , -arty. The first part of the evening was devoted to the packing of 82 boxes with home made cookies as the society ' s partici pation in the Metropolitan Lutheran Inner Mis- sion ' s Christmas Cheer program. These cookies will be distributed throughout various hosp itals and home for the aged in time for Christmas. In addition, the ladie- \ also wrapped presents for the chil- dren of the Grace Lutheran Sun- day School. Later , a buffet supper was en- joyed by the members. The tables were decorated with colorful dishes , candelabra and small p ink and gold Christmas trees. The table center- p iece was a large white iced cake trimmed with red and green and inscribed \A Blessed Christmas to All\ . Each of the ladies alstf re- ceived a gift. The girls made Christmas trees and the meeting closed with the Wish- ing Circle. On December 22 the girls will go Christmas caroling. S'dbert ' s k mlergar- ten class . The new boy is Louis Coppola and we hope he will be happy wi7 h his new classmates. The Willia m Floyd High School students were Wanda Bentley and Susan Hartigan who wore ' very interested in watching the kin- dergarteners working and play- ing during their creative activities period. We heard a Chantikah story from Mrs. Rohrborgh who li g ht- ed some candles on the menorah and played a happy Chanukah song. We also heard pretty music from records brought in by Suzanne Weynard , Nancy Geno- vese and Billy Hoase. Margie Fennelly and Cheryl Dnicker brought in several story books for us to share. We are very busy making sur- prises for Christmas which we hide away in our teacher ' s closet. Our helpers have been Judy Scalsky, Diane Luisi , Jean Glynn , Margie Fennell y Anthony Dum- ont , Herbert Preli , Marietta Lo Coco and Paul Preston. Miss Miller ' s grade two started \tens \ and \ ones \ this week. We used red strips of paper for \tens \ and blue strips for \ ones. \ We also learned the relationship be- tween \tens ' ' and climes and \ ones \ and pennies. Plans for the future include two-digit addition and subtraction as well as preparation for Christ- mas festivities. The class is learning to wo rk quietly- and progress is very good. Neatness , and essential of good work, is also being stressed. In Miss Brook' s grade two , Thanksg iving has come and gone , and we are preparing for Christ- mas . It is lound in our social studies , writing, Eng lish and spel- ling. Of course we are learning c arols , and a special song that Miss Brooks taught all the sec- ond grades . \Santa Claus Express. \ Today, we made our own pictures of the songs and poems we are learning. We learned two poems written by Miss Brooks , for a third grade class she taug ht in Center Moriches. For two weeks , the monitors have been: Noreen Carroll , Frank De Gennaro , Theresa McLean , Edwin Lichtcnberger , Kathleen Holdy, Lois Morelli , Charles Stark , Michele Mason , Susan Schwarz , Andrew Dunn , Edward Turbush and Amy Sposato. In \Special Events \ we had Lois Morelli' s Dutch figures , Pat Severance ' s tiny live turtle , Kath- leen Holdy ' s baby doll with clothes her mother made , Anna Markey, s and Gary Walker ' s special Christ- mas songs , for the class to learn , Charles Stark' s 10 animated T. V. characters , Indian moccasins from Roy Hults , Cristy Violand and Kenny Gregory, deer antlers by Edwin Lichtenberger , Josep h Patera and Kenny Gregory, Michele Mason ' s p laque of a Mexi- can caballero and a donkey tak- ing a siesta , Pamela Scrimas ani- mated monkeys that did things , after being wound , Joseph Patera ' s toy submarine and a picture of his sisters clas s , with Miss Brooks and several brothers and sisters of our classmates. Twice , Theresa McLean has shown us some of her steps from dancing school and she does well. In social studies , we are start- ing to learn how different coun- tries celebrate Christmas and the \ why \ of some of our customs . Our science has been made in- teresting, with Miss Brooks color- el slides of reptiles , pre-historic animals and Indians shown on our own projector and screen. We are studying pioneer life , and next week we will hear the true story of \Christmas on the Mayflower , \ the same Hop kins famil y we read about at Thanksgiving. This week , all the second grades had a get-together where we sang with Miss Brooks and enjoyed seeing slides with Mrs. Gross on the stage. The teachers said we behaved very well and we hope to do it again. Our Tuesday clubs are coming along well , and we are doing in- teresting things with instruments and songs when Miss Froscina comesj to teach us music. In arithmetic we are doing column addition , subtracting two anel three dig it numbers and prov- ing subtraction on paper. Soon we begin learning Roman num- bers . Most of us can do the work in tens and ones , and dimes and pennies. Also , a new group be-' gan the green , second grade reader. This week Miss Ellrich' s grade four welcomed a new student , Edward Smith. A spelling bee was part of our review work and Robert Wall won. Cathey Notaro earned the highest grade on the written test. In social studies , we are learn- ing about the Netherlands. Eileen Hynes wrote a special report on St. Nicholas ' Day in the Nether- lands. Our music teacher taug ht us a new song, \Red River Valley. \ The class helpers were Milagras Zayas , Marca Gambale , Frank Gaeta and Robert Wall. THE HANDY HAVENS LIBRARY CLUB Mrs. Havens , our librarian , or- ganized our library club for sixth grade girls of Nathaniel Wood- hull Elementary School. We have 14 members. The bulletin board for book week was made by Geraldine La Centra. All members of the club read stories to the primary classes during this week. They hope to be able to do this again.
