Munder Monday ri fu - ed to grant a temporary in- junction against the state ' that would have halted the p lanned conversion of a Hi-mile stretch of the Sunrise Highway in Western Suffolk , to a limited access , six- lane expressway. However , the judge ordered a trial be held to settle the issue 1 - . Three week- , ago , the State Pub- lic Works Department was brought into court by landowners and mer- chants along - the route from Islip to Babylon. The plaintiffs include members of the Suffolk Sunrise Highway Association. Their at- torney, Lester Lipkind , seeks to halt the state from its plans , which would turn the highway into a limited access six-lane route , with service roads on each side. The service roads would have exits to the highway every 1 , 600 feet. Mi- . Li p kind claims the land- owners would be '' strangled\ by the change to limited access . Both Islip Supervisor Thomas Harwood and Babylon Supervisor Arthur M. Cromarty have opposed the change , and Mr. Harwood has charged the plan would take away $1 ,700 , 000 in town revenues. The association contends the property involved now has an as- sessed valuation of $37, 000 , 000 , and would be ruined b y the conversion. No other portion of the highway has been changed to limited access. However , links in Eastern Suffolk are being constructed with limited access. Judge Munder , in ordering - a trial , noted that both the state and the p laintiffs have requested an early trial. No date has been set. Vehicle Burg larized When Shirley Man Phones For Wrecker Fifth Precinct police said a Shirley man ' s car was burglarized Sunday of a spare tire and jack, totalling $50 in value , when he left the scene of an accident in which the vehicle was involved to telephone for a wrecker. The man , Frank J. Coratello of Revilo Avenue was driving - a car which was in a minor accident , po- lice said , at Oak Avenue and Dawn Drive about 3:45 p. m. Police said the items were stolen from the vehicle ' s trunk which had been spj 'ung open by the impact of the crash. No one was injured in the accident , police said. Patrolman Josep h Intermaggio investigated. A 21-inch television set , valued at $100 , was stolen between De- cember 6 and Friday, police said , from the home of John Reid of Patchogue Avenue and Riviera Drive, Mastic. Entry was gained through a south window which was forced open. Patrolman Char- les Ratigan was dispatched to the scene when the burglary was re- ported. Fifth Squad Det. Sgt. Ro- bert McCleary is continuing the investigation. Between 9 and 11 p. m. Sunday $18 was stolen from the home of Peter Abramsen of 131 Holiday Boulevard , Center Moriches , ac- cording to Patrolman Fletcher A. Baldwin , who investigated the theft. Patrolman J. P. Woods , the in- vestigating officer , reported that a fire extinguisher , valued at $80 , was stolen between Saturday and Sunday from a boat owned by Paul Martinez of 123 Lonffellow Drive , Mastic Beach , and docked at Whittier Drive , Mastic Beach. Kick-Off Dinner Starts New March of Dimes YOl\LL BE ASKED—Eastern Suffolk citizens soon will be asked io ''Please say yes \ to National Foundation ' s coming appeal for funds. Chapter Chairman Patrick F. Gorman and Mrs. Paul! Will- cox , community chairman for Belle Terre and Harbor Hills sections of \ Port Jefferson , discuss campaign plans at kick-off meeting in Riverhead. Mrs. Willcox , mother of three small bovs , is herself si polio victim and spent a year in a foundation treatment center. —Photo by Adams RIVERHEAD — \Polio is not finished , \ said Patrick F. Gorman , chairman of the Eastern Suffolk Chapter of the National Foundation , as he spoke to enthusiastic volunteer leaders of the New March of Dimes at a kickoff campaign dinner hero November 29. Mr. Gorman toM j hej eaders , gatheied at Regula ' s , that not only * h.i there a great deal of help needed in the care , treatment and rehabilitation of polio victims of past years , but there were 1, 800 new cases ol polio in the nation this year. However , as the polio picture continues to brighten with the foundation ' s success in perfecting the Salk and Sabin vaccines , the program has been expanded to cover not only polio , but birth de- fects and arthritis. Birth defects , a field which has received little attention until re- centl y, account for significant ab- normalities in one of every 1(> ba- bies born. Arthritis cripples nearly one-third of 1.000 , 000 Americans so severel y tlv y cannot work or function normall y. Mr. Gorman , in announcing a goal of $18 , 000 to be raised by the local charter , exp lained that ap- proximately 50 per cent of this sum will be retained by the cha* .,- ter for use in the local area. The remaining funds go to the National Foundation for medical care , pro- fessional education and research. Under emergency circumstances the National Foundation pours funds into affected areas. Air. G01- man told the group, and illustrated with the fact that the National Foundation has spent as much as $35,000 for treatment and rehabili- tation of a single polio case in tlr ' s area. Continuing, Mr. Gorman empha- sized that \ when a need exists , the chapter will spend to its hut (!,me io meet that need ; we are not intez-ested in keeping - money in the bank to draw interest. \ Eastern Suffolk Chapter , which includes tht: towns of Brookhaven , East Hampton , Riverhead, Shelter Island , Southampton and Southold , has $15 , 000 of equi pment now out on loan to polio victims in this area , he declared. The New Alarch of Dimes will be climaxed here January 30 with the Mothers ' Alarch , when mothers here , and all over the nation , go to their neighbors ' doors in a heart- to-heart appeal for funds for care , treatment , rehabilitation and re- search in the fight against polio- myelitis , birth defects and arthri- tis. There will also be 40 , 000 appeal letters sent by the local chapter to residents of the eastern towns. Jean A. Dargis , state represen- tative of the National Foundation, also spoke to the group of about 40 workers. An appealing film il- lustrating the work of treatment and rehabilitation centers was shown at the dinner meeting. Honorary chairmen for the New March of Dimes in Eastern Suf- folk include: H. Lee Dennison , L. Barron Hill , Henry AI. Zaleski, Lester M. Albertson , William P. Bain , Sr., Arthur AI. Cromarty, Charles Dominy, Evans K. Grif- fing, William J. Leonard , Adrian F.
